The weekend kicks off Friday night with a nice main slate schedule of 15 games. The pitching landscape appears to be full of great choices to pay up for so if that’s the route you take finding the right combinations of lower-priced options could be key. Let’s break it down with another trip Around the Horn
PITCHER
Blake Snell TB $10,000
Snell isn’t as dominant as last season but had a promising outing last time out versus the Boston Red Sox registering 25.9 DKpts. Although the Angels just have 19 at-bats all tole off of Snell, they are hitting just .211 with a .634 OPS. Snell’s K/9(12.25) and BB/9(2.50) are very solid. His overall numbers are bound to improve as well given the .321 BABIP.
INFIELD
Cheslor Cuthbert KC $3,700
Cuthbert has shown the Royals that he is worthy of playing time of late and at this price point is definitely worth taking a flyer on. Cuthbert has hits in nine of his last 10 games and has two multi-hit games mixed in there as well.
Daniel Robertson TB $2,700
Robertson could give us a few points out of the middle infield position. He has struggled this season given his batting average hovering around the Mendoza line but the Rays have a sneaky good offense and Robertson is 3-for-6 with a homer and 4 RBI off of Angels left-handed starter Andrew Heaney.
OUTFIELD
Adam Jones ARI $3,900
One would think to stay far away from a game that features perennial all-star Max Scherzer is a good strategy, and it is, but further examining Jones very affordable price tag and the good sample size of success Jones has off of Scherzer, rostering Jones is a very viable play. Jones has been a steady force in the Diamondbacks lineup hitting .274 with 12 HRs and 37 RBI and is 13-for-35 with 1.171 OPS off of the Nats ace.
Alex Gordon KC $4,300
Gordon’s resurgence this season has taken a bit of a dip over his last 10 games but on the whole, has been far better this season compared to last. His HR total of 10 is just three less of his total from last year, all while playing in 77 fewer games to date. The strikeout % has improved this season as well as it is at just 16.4, his career mark is 21.5. As for his hard hit%, it’s up from his career mark of 32.3% to 37.6%. Gordon has good numbers against right-handed Twins starter Kyle Gibson in his career slashing .333/.407/.500 in 48 at-bats.
