Under the counsel of his dad at Cal Poly, the 21-year-old stood out in ways most collegiate players bear just a glimpse of. Dating back to his 2021 season, the shortstop was selected for five All-American teams, as well as a member of the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. Along with several other accolades in 2021 and ’22, Lee’s achievements are far superior to the average prospect.

Strengths

While he may not have jaw-dropping speed, Lee fares enough to get by. His most alluring attribute is Lee’s excellence from both sides of the plate. As a result of his disciplined consciousness at the dish, the thriving prodigy has always been a tough cookie as a switch hitter. Inducing a 58-to-57 walk-to-strikeout ratio throughout his two-season stint with Cal Poly, Lee can make a pitcher sweat like nobody’s business.

A rare component to find in amateur baseball players is the unceasing talent for bat-to-ball stability. Unlike many, his 6-foot-2 frame has the knack for that exact technique. Sporting a .342 batting average in 2021, and a .367 average in 2022. In addition, Lee maintains a balanced composure at the plate which at times can produce a heap of power.

In the defensive department as a re-draft prospect (drafted by the San Francisco Giants in 2019), Lee presents an above-average arm with solid glove instincts. However, as a shortstop who has been in the system for quite a while, many expect him to move on from his current spot. Courtesy of his well-regarded arm, Lee may shift just one base over to the hot corner.

Weaknesses

Lee doesn’t have too many defects in his game. As a well-rounded prospect, the shortstop phenom is pretty hard to pick apart. Although, the top prospect did have an opportunity to join the MLB bandwagon at the age of 18 which he briefly declined. While he had the privilege to serve under his dad at Cal Poly, Lee enters the draft at the age of 21. He may not see the big leagues for three or four years which would clock him at 24 or 25 as a rookie.

Pro Comparison: Tim Anderson

While Anderson serves as a right-handed bat and Lee from both sides of the dish, they both have similarities in several aspects. Great bat-to-ball skills with a durable glove and an above-average arm. It’s not a simple task to sort players straight out of college, however, Lee and Anderson are simply alike.

Draft Projection: Baltimore Orioles, Round 1, Pick 1

With the Orioles in possession of the number one overall pick, the ambitious shortstop could be the end result of Baltimore’s first round. This year’s draft class is scattered with high-end talent, from Druw Jones to Elijah Green and Termarr Johnson. While prospects may have an edge over Lee, many experts foresee him as the number one overall pick.
