If we’re being 100 percent honest, I’m not even playing the slate today. Why? It’s a four-gamer starting at 4:05 EST. There is just way too much variance and randomness with a slate this small. When a .200 hitting backup catcher could make or break you, I’ll gladly stay away. I will never tell you to do something that I wouldn’t do. With that said, you’re still reading this and you’re still here. So, that means I can’t tell you not to play it either. I still went ahead and did some research to try to help narrow it down. Let’s get right into the picks for today as I present to you some quick core plays.
Pitching
Aaron Nola ($9,600 on DK and FD)
It’s a good matchup for Nola. The San Diego Padres hit only .195 against him. Granted with only 47 at-bats, but the Padres struggle at times against good right-handed arms. They strikeout at a 27.3% rate and have only a .700 OPS against righties. After a rough start to the season, the month of May was much more pleasant to Nola. In 33 IP, he posted a 2.73 ERA, striking out 42 batters, and allowing opponents batting average of only .246.
Hitting
C Will Smith ($2,800 on DK and $2,300 on FD)
Smith is one of the better prospects the Dodgers have. He was tearing it up in the minors and so far, has been hitting nicely since being called up. He has a .286 average and hit his first home run on June 1st.
1B/3B Yuli Gurriel ($3,500 on DK and $3,200 on FD)
I think your decision will come down to Tyler White or Gurriel in cash games. I found the salary to make it work with Gurriel. He has a solid matchup against Wade LeBlanc. LeBlanc is sporting a 6.99 ERA and giving up a bunch of hard contacts (41.2%).
2B/OF Enrique Hernandez ($3,900 on DK and $3,100 on FD)
Hernandez is almost locked button status against any lefty. Today is no different against Robbie Ray. He is 8-31 lifetime against him with three home runs.
OF Mike Trout ($5,700 on DK and $4,900 on FD)
The wind is blowing in a little from right field, but on a slate like this you pretty much just lock in the best player available in every spot. Jon Lester has not been pitching well as of late. Earlier in May, Lester was leading the Majors with a 1.16 ERA. Three starts since being at that marker, Lester’s ERA is now at 3.59. He’s given up at least four earned runs in each of his last three outings.
Kyle Schwarber ($4,100 on DK and $3,400 on FD)
Schwarber has been swinging it well since moving to the leadoff spot in the Cubs order. He struggled a little bit this past weekend, going 1-11 with two walks. But just about everyone in the Cubs lineup struggled. He draws a fair matchup against opener, Cam Bedrosian and long reliever, Trevor Cahill. Bedrosian has been pretty good with an ERA sitting at 3.08. Cahill? Not so much. He has a 6.92 ERA.
