MLB DFS August 3: Top Targets, Value Plays, and Stacks

COVID-19 has been wreaking havoc on this MLB season so far, forcing the cancellation of several games. But so far, it has still been full speed ahead. We all can continue to try to make some money. Tonight we have nine games, including the Phillies returning to action against the Yankees at 7:05 pm ET after not having any new positive tests. Let’s keep it rolling with some stacks and top targets for tonight’s action. All pricing is based on Draftkings.

Pitchers:

Gerrit Cole ($11,000) – The Yankees white whale has lived up to all the hype through two starts, as he has given up only four runs and struck out 12 through 11.2 innings. He could get even better in the matchup against the Phillies, who haven’t been in action since last Sunday against the Marlins and could show some rust. I look for Cole to go deep in this one. He made it two outs into the seventh inning in his last start against the Orioles.

Jacob deGrom ($11,600) – The two best pitchers in baseball are starting tonight, which is very good for baseball. DeGrom has a slight advantage over Cole in that regard and has been very dominant thus far. He holds a WHIP of 0.55 and a K rate of 31.6% through 11 innings pitched over two starts. DeGrom faces the Braves tonight who he pitched against in his first start. He struck out eight and allowed just one hit and one walk in five innings against Atlanta. The one thing he won’t be able to get is a win most likely, as the Mets never give him run support, but that won’t matter much.

Value Play: Frankie Montas ($7,300) vs. Mariners

Hitters:

Charlie Blackmon ($5,700) – It has been a fast start for Blackmon, as he has gotten a hit in six straight games and at least two in five straight. He faces Johnny Cueto who he rakes against, being 12-for-37 (.324) with one homer in his career against the Giants right-hander. The game is also at home in Colorado. Blackmon has mashed 37 long balls since 2018 at Coors Field, one of them coming on Friday.

Willson Contreras ($4,500) – The Cubs’ catcher has gotten off to a great start, slashing .333/.419/.630 through 27 at-bats and faces Danny Duffy of the Royals who has given up six runs in 9.1 innings. I could see him breaking through with his second homer of the season tonight.

Value Play: Nick Madrigal ($2,800) vs. Brett Anderson

Stacks:

New York Yankees – Aaron Judge ($5,100) has been on fire to start the season, with six homers in five games, and that is where you start this stack as the Yankees face a mediocre Jake Arrieta making his season debut. He is coming off a season in which he had a 4.89 FIp, 1.39 HR/9 rate, and 38.3% hard-hit rate. The Yankees are the best team in the league so far at 7-1 while scoring at least five runs in five straight games. Other solid plays for this stack are DJ LeMahieu($4,100) – hitless in just one game so far -, Giancarlo Stanton ($5,800), and Aaron Hicks ($4,400).

Minnesota Twins The Twins face a horrible left-handed pitcher in Derek Holland of the Pirates, and they rake against southpaws. They are in the top two of team OPS, ISO, and wOBA since the start of 2019. Nelson Cruz ($4,500) and Miguel Sano ($4,700) have both hit two homers against Holland in their careers in fairly limited samples. Unfortunately, Josh Donaldson is sidelined with calf tightness, as he owns Holland.
