MLB DFS August 23: Arms, Bats, and Stacks

No long, drawn out rambling intro today. You don’t have time. You know what you’re here for. Let’s get straight to the MLB DFS selections for today’s games.

Arms

Yu Darvish ($11,000 DK, $10,200 FD)

The wind is expected to be blowing out again at Wrigley Field in Chicago. The White Sox have been smashing the ball as of late, hitting a record 27 home runs in a seven-game stretch. However, good pitching beats good hitting, usually, and Darvish has been lights out this season. He has a 1.80 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, and has at least 22.2 DK points in each of his last four outings.

Carlos Carrasco ($10,500 DK, $9,300 FD)

Cookie disappointed in his last start versus a beatable Pittsburgh Pirates team, scoring only nine DK points in 4.1 innings of work while allowing five hits and three earned runs. Be that as it may, he gets another favorable matchup, toeing the rubber against the Detroit Tigers, a team he’s had some success against in the past. The Tigers also lead the league in K% versus right-handed pitchers, with a 30% rate. Go back to the well with Cookie.

Corbin Burnes ($7,400 DK, $7,300 FD)

Burnes has effectively mixed a wide array of pitches, throwing a fastball, cutter, changeup, curve, and slider, while also tossing a sinker in once in a while. So far, in the span of 21 innings pitched, he’s racked up 29 strikeouts, good enough for a 33.3% K%. The walk rate (16.1%) is concerning, but he gets a good matchup against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Buccos have one of the worst offenses this season, averaging only 4.22 runs per game. Burnes is somewhat of a safe play, given his salary.

Bats

Ian Happ ($3,500 DK, $3,200 FD)

Raise his price on DraftKings or I will continue to write him up and lock him in. A post-hype favorite of mine, Happ, has gotten himself off to quite the start, hitting .296 with six homers and 15 RBI. His 16.2% walk rate and .424 wOBA are both in the top 10 percentile in the league. Lefties have given Dylan Cease fits, with a .371 wOBA and 2.26 HR/9 rate against him in his short career.

Xander Bogaerts ($5,200 DK, $3,600 FD)

Shortstop isn’t a position I want to get too cute with today. I’m going to go ahead and spend up for Xander. He hasn’t hit LeBlanc well in the past, batting only 1-for-13 against him, but I’ll take his career track record and season stats versus lefties over of the BvP numbers. Four of his six homers hit this season, have come off southpaws, and he’s a lifetime .305 hitter with a .368 wOBA against them.

Other Targets: Nelson Cruz, Ji-Man Choi, Kevin Pillar

BvP Plays

Austin Meadows vs Trent Thornton

Meadows is 7-for-12 with three homers and a .803 wOBA versus Thornton.

J.D. Martinez vs Wade LeBlanc

Martinez is 6-for-14 with two bombs and a 1.467 OPS lifetime against LeBlanc. He’s also smashed lefties, with a career 162 wRC+ and .412 wOBA against southpaws.

Stacks

Chicago Cubs

I’m sure someone will point out that this is my biased love for the Cubbies coming out, but hear me out. Dylan Cease has been a more viable streaming option than a regular fantasy asset to this point in his career. He doesn’t strikeout a ton of batters, with only a 15.5% K rate this season, and the wind is blowing out at Wrigley. Also, his Fly Ball rate is sitting slightly above the league average at 23.5%. Give me the Cubs in a game that they’d love to win, to at least salvage something from this series against the Sox. Ian Happ, Anthony Rizzo, Kyle Schwarber, Willson Contreras, and Victor Caratini are my favorite targets.

Tampa Bay Rays

Trent Thornton has yet to allow a home run this season, but his ERA is already through the roof, sitting at 13.50. Granted it’s a small sample size, but he doesn’t scare me here. The Rays are projected for almost five runs in this game and their prices are rather affordable across the industry.

BOS @ BAL

I want exposure to both teams in this game from a hitting perspective. The Red Sox have some lefty killers, going up against Wade LeBlanc who has a 7.89 ERA and 5.61 xFIP this season. Baltimore will be squaring off against Zack Godley who has a 1.85 WHIP and 6.87 ERA this year. Anthony Santander has been on fire and Cedric Mullins is hitting leadoff with a dirt cheap salary.
