The second of the winner-take-all games starts tonight as the Oakland Athletics host the Tampa Bay Rays to determine who will travel to Houston for the ALDS. In yesterday’s article, Joey Ricotta told you to have Yasmani Grandal as your Captain and he didn’t disappoint. Today we will see if we can call another one. Let’s get to it.
All prices are based on DraftKings.
Captain
Khris Davis ($7,500) – With a price this low for a premier power guy it is hard to not throw him in at the Captain’s spot. Davis has struggled this year not even getting to his usual .247 average. He also only hit 23 HRs which is well off his usual 40+ bombs. With all of that being said, he is still just as likely to hit a bomb tonight as anyone in the park and at that price it will allow you much more flexibility for the rest of your squad. Davis is also 3-21 in his career off Charlie Morton but two of those hits were HRs.
Utility
Charlie Morton ($11,200) – Morton set career highs this season with 240 Ks, 194.2 IP, and 16 wins. He finished the season off strong going six innings, allowing no runs and one hit while striking out nine Yankees last Wednesday. He is well-rested and has a nice floor because of the strikeout potential. Roll him out with confidence.
Sean Manaea ($10,400) – Manaea came back from injury and has been pretty dominant in his five tuneup starts. 4-1 with a 1.21 ERA and a 30/7 K/BB rate in 29.2 innings. As with Morton, the Oakland lefty gives us a nice floor and strikeout upside. Also, some of the big hitters on Tampa Bay like Tommy Pham, Brandon Lowe, and Austin Meadows haven’t seen him yet which is generally a nice advantage for a pitcher like Manaea.
Matt Olson ($7,800) – Let’s get another big bat in the lineup. Olson has shown everyone the power is real. Despite missing 35 games this season, he hit 36 HRs. For September he has a .938 OPS with nine bombs in 111 PAs. He also loves hitting righties as he slashed .288/.380/.577 with 25 HRs against them. Olson has also had a bit of success against Morton going 4-12 with a HR and a couple walks.
Other Options: Matt Chapman ($7,400), Avisail Garcia ($7,200), Travis d’Arnaud ($6,800)
