Welcome back, my fellow MLB DFS degenerates. It’s Friday night, and we have a whopping 12-game slate popping off at 7:05pm EDT. There is a ton of value on this Friday night, and we aim to “set it and forget it.” Our lineups will be racking up cash while we paint the town red, giving us a little something to wake up to besides a hangover.
With 24 pitchers set to take the mound, there are certainly plenty of options and plenty of value. Tonight, I’m bucking the trends and gambling on a pair of mid-priced arms while leaving plenty of capital for my bats. Still, there is value to be found wielding the lumber, as well. We’ll nab a couple of those before filling out the lineup with a strong backbone. You’ll see some of those studs with a lot of Friday potential listed after the value picks below.

Value on the Hill
Chase Silseth – vs Oakland ($7,800)
Trotting out a 22-year-old making just his second career MLB start could be a dangerous proposition in DFS. However, it could also be a difference maker between your lineup and just about everyone else’s. Silseth was the first player from the 2021 draft to reach the majors and did not disappoint. In his first start against the Athletics, he went six shutout innings allowing just one hit and two walks while registering his first career win. There was some debate as to whether Silseth would start again, but here he is one week later facing the same exact team for his second go ’round. A better hitting team might have had an advantage seeing the youngster for a second time, but Oakland scores just 3.30 runs per game (rank: 28) and Silseth will have his fastball approaching triple digits. Start him with confidence.
Aaron Civale – vs Detroit ($5,800)
Gamble No. 2 is Civale, who has been awful this season but whose opponent is the impetus for the choice. Civale holds an ugly 9.85 ERA to go with a 1.74 WHIP, though he still striking out over nine batters per nine innings pitched. The righty won 12 games on the strength of a 3.84 ERA and 99 strikeouts in a 2021 breakout campaign, suggesting it won’t take much to turn the ship around. This season, Civale’s numbers have been a result of pitching against the likes of the Yankees, Blue Jays, Twins, and others capable of putting the ball over the fence. The Guardians are at home and taking on the Tigers, who are far and away the lowest-scoring team in the majors. They average just 2.76 runs per game. On the road they are even worse, managing just two runs per contest. Last season, Civale went 3-0 against Detroit with a 1.99 ERA and a 0.66 WHIP. He’s a good bet to meet those numbers tonight.
Value in the Field
Alex Verdugo, OF – vs Seattle ($3,400)
Verdugo had a rough go of it for a while, which has lowered his cost significantly. However, with two hits on Tuesday and a 3-for-5 effort yesterday, it appears he’s turning the corner. He crossed the plate four times against the Mariners last night, which is where his value lies. It would be nice to see Verdugo add some stolen bases to his 2022 repertoire, but for now it’s just good to see him hitting again. Against Robbie Ray, expect the Boston outfielder to be on the basepaths multiple times this evening.
Adam Frazier, 2B – at Boston ($4,100)
Staying in the same game, Frazier is almost guaranteed to get multiple hits in the affair. While he can occasionally be a boom/bust candidate, Frazier has had a multi-hit game in seven of his last 12 games with four doubles and seven bases on balls. Michael Wacha has had a resurgence in numbers this season, but it’s largely being done with smoke and mirrors. Seattle has been climbing the ranks of runs/game as they put more and more on the board. Frazier is largely a catalyst for that lineup, and I expect him to cross the plate multiple times on Friday night.
Hunter Renfroe, OF – vs Washington ($4,800)
Nearly $5k barely seems like “value”, but the operative word here is ‘nearly’. In 2022, Renfroe should probably be going for more money in DFS lineups, especially when facing off against Erick Fedde. Fedde is toting a 4.24 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP and has not made it past the fifth inning except for one start. Renfroe is batting .250 in a down year for averages and has hit nine dingers, scored 19 runs and driven in 16 on the strength of a .508 slugging percentage. Tonight, he bucks the righty-righty matchup with Fedde and yanks a ball over the leftfielder’s head and into the stands.
