Miami Dolphins 2021 Fantasy Football Preview

The Miami Dolphins are coming off of a year where they just missed the playoffs after going 10-6 with rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa taking over halfway through the season. The main need in free agency was clearly finding Tagovailoa weapons and they did just that by signing Will Fuller. Now, a lot of the roster remains the same, and several players bring really nice fantasy value to the table.

Quarterbacks – Tua Tagovailoa, Jacoby Brissett

Tagovailoa has faced a lot of criticism in such a short amount of time. Many were calling for him to be replaced last year but the Dolphins are sticking with their guy, as they should. In 2020, Tagovailoa was QB31, although he only started eight games last season. Tagovailoa averaged 13.5 points per game but this number should almost certainly balloon this season. We don’t normally mention backups, but Brissett is worth talking about. He fits the Dolphins scheme perfectly, and if Tagovailoa were to get hurt or underperform, he’s worth picking up off of waivers.

Running Backs – Myles Gaskin, Salvon Ahmed, Malcolm Brown

Gaskin has almost certainly established himself as the lead back, and one that should get a ton of touches. He was RB25 last season, averaging 16.4 points per game and we should see this production go up. The only issue is that Brown may steel some red zone touches from Gaskin, being the more powerful back by nature. However, after catching 47 balls out of the backfield last year, Gaskin has established himself as a true dual-threat and should see lots of production here and in the ground game.

As for the backups, we already mentioned how Brown should see some goal line touches, but otherwise, this is still a camp battle. Ahmed is a little more versatile, but Brown is just a tad more talented and should take this one. If Gaskin goes down, both of these guys will be worth looking at picking up.

Wide Receivers – DeVante Parker, Jaylen Waddle, Will Fuller

This is a loaded wide receiver room at the top and bottom. Parker was WR40 last year and averaged 12 fantasy points per game, while Fuller had 17.2 in 11 games. Now these two combine and will undoubtedly take touches from each other, however, Fuller is suspended for the first game of the season, so start Parker early, but we’ve got to play it by ear after that. Waddle was the sixth pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and the rookie will need some touches and is a major big-play threat. Waddle will also return punts which could get him some really nice points here and there. Overall, all three of these guys are worth drafting but are probably all worthy of flex spots until we see who’s getting the touches.

Tight Ends – Mike Gesicki

Gesicki is one of the premier fantasy tight ends. He’s not one to take early and secure an elite guy, but he’s one worth taking in the second tier of tight ends. Gesicki was TE7 last year and averaged 10.6 points per game. The mammoth target does have a lot of pass-catchers around him but he should continue his great production because of his red-zone ability.

Defense/Special Teams

The Dolphins had a very good D/ST last year and the majority of the thanks goes to Xavien Howard who led the league with 10 interceptions. This unit averaged 8.8 points per game and hit double digits seven times. Overall, this is a D/ST is a top unit and a weekly starting option.
