Mets’ Jacob deGrom Leaves Start With Back Injury

After going through one of the healthiest stretches in recent franchise history, it appears that the Mets finally have an injury to worry about it.

And it’s a big one.

During intrasquad action on Tuesday, two-time Cy Young award winner Jacob deGrom was pulled from his start with back tightness.

Amed Rosario led off the game with a single and stole second base promptly. deGrom finished the inning but Justin Wilson trotted out to the mound in the next inning.

deGrom threw three innings in his last start and two innings in the previous one, making this outing presumably longer than both of those.

The season starts in 10 days and it is slightly worrisome that deGrom departed with discomfort. He is slated to start on Opening Day against the Atlanta Braves.

Last season, deGrom won the Cy Young award by compiling a 2.43 ERA with an 11-8 record and 255 strikeouts in 204 innings pitched, beating out Max Scherzer for the award.

The Mets are already short a man with no Noah Syndergaard for the 2020 season and are relying on Marcus Stroman, Steven Matz, Rick Porcello, and Michael Wacha to pick up the slack.

If deGrom is out for a little while, look for the Mets to call up left-handed pitching prospect David Peterson as the next arm.
