Coming off of a heartbreaking loss on the road to the Atlanta Dream, the Minnesota Lynx played an impressive game at home to beat the Phoenix Mercury for the fourth straight time Sunday night. In this 75-62 victory over the Mercury, the Lynx came out strong, scoring quick points. Throughout the game, the Lynx were able to body their way past a physical Phoenix team as all five Lynx starters finished in double-digits. This win puts Minnesota at 10-7 as they remain number four in league standings.
Tonight was not only a fantastic home win for Minnesota, but it was also a record-breaking game for Lynx center Sylvia Fowles. In Sunday’s game, Fowles put up 12 pts and 10 rebounds to set a new record for most WNBA double-doubles passing WNBA legend Lisa Leslie who was the former record holder. In addition to this notable achievement, Lynx guard Napheesa Collier put up her first career double-double.
As for the Phoenix Mercury, this game was another tough one. Though Mercury forward Dewanna Bonner had a 27 point night, the Lynx made it difficult for her to score in the 2nd half. Phoenix also played the game without forward Sancho Little (knee) and legendary shooting guard Diana Taurasi due to a tweak in her back that she suffered in the road game in Connecticut on Friday. Sunday’s loss in Minnesota puts the Mercury record at 7-8 as they remain number eight in league standings.
“We’ve got to go home and protect home court, re-group, watch the film and get over this. We don’t need to dwell on this loss too long because we’ve got another team coming to our home court,” said Mercury center Brittney Griner in a post-game interview. In the coming days, Phoenix will look to get a fresh start at home on July 17th where they will take on the Dallas Wings at 3:30 p.m. ET. Minnesota will have another home game against the Seattle Storm on July 17th at 8:00 p.m. ET.
