Football is the ultimate team game, but sometimes a player can have such a huge impact that losing him can dramatically turn the game around. The New York Jets lost 17-16 to the Buffalo Bills, and that’s just what happened in today’s game.
During the offseason, there was some murmuring that the Jets overpaid for LB C.J. Mosley. The game on Sunday afternoon was a tale of two halves, and the major difference was the presence of Mosley — who left the game with a calf injury.
In the first half, the Bills didn’t run the football much — only six carries, and that was probably due to Mosley’s presence and his ability in the running game. After he left the game, the Bills went from 3.5 yards per carry to 5.6.

In the first half, three of the runs were Allen scrambles. Once Mosley went out of the game, the Bills changed their game plan. All 19 rush attempts were designed runs with many to the middle of the field.
His absence severely impacted the scoreboard as well. The Jets lost 17-16, and all 17 points were scored without Mosley on the field.
According to Spotrac, the Jets paid Mosley $51 million guaranteed and a total value of 5 years/$85 million. The Jets played sloppy on offense. The play-calling and execution were terrible, but they were in that game because of their captain and defensive signal-caller. Once he left, the game fell out of their grasp. He’s worth every penny, and you can point to his exit as the main reason the Jets lost this game.
