The penultimate day of regular season baseball is upon us. These are the last two days of full slates to make some money. As many teams are no longer playing for anything but pride, there will be some strange lineup constructions. You must check to be sure your guys are, in fact, in the lineup and keep an eye out for cheap youngsters who are getting their shot. We will be covering the evening slate here so let’s get after it.
Locks
Luis Severino – In his final tuneup before the playoffs, the Yankees righty gets the Texas Rangers in Arlington. Sevy has started two games since coming off the IL. He has yet to give up a run in nine innings and has struck out 13 in that time. More importantly, the Yankees are looking to stretch him out a bit more as he threw 67 and 80 pitches respectively in those starts. The wind will be blowing in from RF tonight at about 13-15 mph and Severino will likely try to get to 90-100 pitches. Even at $10,100 on DraftKings he can return top value as six or seven innings and double-digit Ks are easily within reach.
Justin Verlander – I know his price looks kind of high at $12,800 on DK but he is going for a couple of milestones tonight. He needs six strikeouts for 3,000 in his career. He also needs 12 Ks for 300 on the season. The first one is all but a lock. The second one is why Verlander will pitch tonight until he gets there. The ALDS doesn’t start until Friday which would give Verlander an extra day’s rest if he goes in Game One. He will pitch to get that #300 and that means more points for us.
Brett Anderson – Here is a cheap option to pair with one of the aforementioned studs. Although Anderson doesn’t really offer much K upside with 87 Ks in 171 IP, he does offer a safe floor. In his last 14 starts, he’s gone six innings nine times and has allowed more than four runs only twice. The Oakland A’s need to keep winning to hopefully have home field in the AL Wild Card game against the Tampa Bay Rays. You should be able to count on a solid 10-15 point performance.
Stacks
Milwaukee Brewers and Colorado Rockies in Coors Field – The game will begin as the battle of the Gonzalezes. Gio against Chi Chi. It will soon devolve into a slugfest. They combined for 18 runs last night and today the wind will be blowing out at close to 20 mph! This is a perfect game to grab some cheaper values so you can spend up on the aces.
Barrels
Garrett Hampson – He is someone you have to have in your lineups. He is still only $3,900 on DK and has an eight-game hitting streak. During that streak, he has a 1.051 OPS with four HRs and six SBs. Lock and load this one as a no-brainer.
Matt Chapman – Another fairly cheap option at third base costing us $4,000 on DK. He is 5-13 with a couple HRs in his last three games. He draws Marco Gonzales against whom he is 11-23 with four doubles, a triple, and a HR in his career.
Jason Heyward – Although he was on the bench yesterday, Heyward may draw the start against Adam Wainwright. They will be looking to possibly knock the hated St. Louis Cardinals out of the top spot in the NL Central just for spite. Heyward has a long history against the Cards righty and is 12-36 with a HR and seven RBI in his career vs Wainwright which is good enough to turn value considering he is only $3,400.
Hunter Renfroe – Dart throw here. At $4,000 he is a boom or bust play and is only 3-20 vs Robbie Ray but those three hits went over the fence.
