Notable cuts

Demaryius Thomas is by far one of the most surprising of all the New England cuts. His release could mean one of two things. Either he is not as healthy as fans have been lead to believe or N’Keal Harry’s recovery is going smoothly. Do not rule out a return as there is reportedly mutual interest on both sides for a reunion.

Brian Hoyer has been a mainstay as quarterback Tom Brady’s backup. This is the second time Hoyer has been released in favor of a younger signal caller. It is a sign that Jarrett Stidham has showed enough promise to take over as Brady’s understudy.

Gunner Olszewski was considered a candidate to make the roster field punts in place of wide receiver Julian Edelman. A practice squad candidate for sure.

UPDATE: The Patriots have reportedly changed their mind and are keeping Olszewski.

Braxton Berrios was drafted out of the University of Miami a season ago and was one of the players to watch this camp. Berrios has struggled with his health his entire career.

These two cuts signal that Jakobi Meyers has most likely won a roster spot on the 53-man roster.

Dan Skipper was taking a lot of snaps in place of Isaiah Wynn. As the former first round pick got healthier, Skipper’s playing time decreased. The trades for Korey Cunningham and Jermaine Eluemunor did not help his cause. A candidate for the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Eric Saubert was acquired in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons for a conditional seventh-round selection to add depth to the tight end position. The Patriots seem to be content moving forward with Ryan Izzo and Matt LaCosse until Lance Kendricks and Ben Watson come back from suspension.

There are 59 members on the roster. The team has seven more moves to make.

*The deadline to have the roster trimmed to 53 is 4:00 p.m. EST.
