Raiders vs. Patriots: Week 1 Preview, Betting Odds, TV Info

Raiders Vs Patriots

The Las Vegas Raiders and New England Patriots meet Sunday at Gillette Stadium for the fourth time on the opening weekend of the NFL season. The Patriots have won all three of those previous matchups.

It will be an interesting meetup as the Las Vegas Raiders have only won 18 games in the past three seasons. Meanwhile, the New England Patriots have only won 16 in the same amount of time. Each team enters the season with a new head coach: Mike Vrabel in New England and Pete Carroll in Las Vegas. The Patriots hold a slight 18-16-1 edge in the regular season, though the Raiders have won the last two matchups.

The Patriots are betting on Drake Maye to lead the team to success. Though Maye does not have a plethora of talent around him on offense, New England has done their best in the offseason to help set him up to be successful. Meanwhile, the Raiders have gone with veteran quarterback Geno Smith to hang their season hopes on. Along with Smith, the Raiders have rookie running back Ashton Jeanty to help the offense. However, Las Vegas will feel the loss of Amari Cooper, who decided to retire from the NFL a mere three days before the start of the season.

Betting Odds

Point Spread

Raiders +2.5 (-102)
Patriots -2.5 (-118)

Moneyline

Raiders +130
Patriots -155

Over/Under

Raiders 44.5 (-102)
Patriots 44.5 (-118)

It looks like Vegas is expecting the Patriots to have an advantage over the Raiders. However, it is difficult to determine what combination of circumstances might be the contributing factor.

What To Watch For

If the Patriots have the lead at halftime, there is a good chance the victory will be theirs. They are 110-6 all-time in the regular season when leading at halftime at home. Maye has looked comfortable in the new system created by Josh McDaniels, so keep an eye out for a quick passing game that will attempt to avoid Las Vegas’ pass rush.

The Raiders will have all eyes on them, since the consensus is that they have not done much to change the status quo from last season. The offense has received a slight upgrade, but the concern will be their defense. Maxx Crosby will perform as expected, but it will be interesting to see how Germaine Pratt and Jeremy Chinn fit into the Raiders’ plan for their defense.
