Lakers Eyeing Heat’s Wayne Ellington as Potential Trade Target

Apparently, Phoenix Suns Forward Trevor Ariza isn’t the only player the Lakers have their eyes on, according to Sean Deveney of Sporting News. As Deveney details in his latest piece, the Lakers have been eyeing Miami Heat guard Wayne Ellington as they look to surround LeBron James with shooters.

Ellington, who signed a one-year, $6.27 million deal with the Heat during the 2018 offseason, has the power to veto any trade but may consider moving to a contender if Miami continues to struggle. The Lakers are currently fifth in the Western Conference and appear to be a lock for the playoffs. Furthermore, once Dion Waiters returns, Ellington could find himself out of the rotation.

According to the report, the Heat would be open to sending the veteran sharpshooter to a playoff team for a first-round pick. It’s a lot to ask for a role player on an expiring contract, but if Miami takes back a bad contract, a deal could become more realistic. Since Ellington signed a deal back in July, he won’t be eligible to be traded until this Saturday.

This season, Ellington is averaging 9.7 points per game on 37 percent from three-point range. He plays well off the ball and is one of the best spot-up shooters in the league. While his defense is questionable, he’s shown enough willingness to compete on that end of the floor.
