Throughout the month of January, I will be ranking the top ten NFL players at each position. These rankings will be solely based on performance in the regular season and will not include any injured players. The positions of players were determined from ESPN.
Without further ado, let’s take a look at the top ten quarterbacks from the 2020 NFL season.
No. 10 | Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers
In his rookie season, Herbert has shown flashes every week that he will be the Chargers’ franchise quarterback for years to come. Herbert threw for over 4,300 yards and 31 touchdowns this season, setting the all-time record for most touchdown passes thrown by a rookie. He is the front-runner for Offensive Rookie of the Year, and for good reason.
No. 9 | Ryan Tannehill, Tennessee Titans
Tannehill signed a four-year, $118 million contract extension after bringing the Titans to the AFC Championship last season. He’s proven to be worth the money. Tannehill threw for 3,819 passing yards, 33 touchdowns and only seven interceptions this season.
No. 8 | Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens
The 2019 Most Valuable Player struggled to replicate his success from last season, partly due to his lack of weapons on offense. Regardless, Jackson has elite running ability and has improved his passing. He tallied over 2,750 yards and 26 touchdowns through the air, plus another 1005 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground this season.
No. 7 | Tom Brady, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
After joining the Buccaneers in free agency, Brady was given the best receiving corps in the league. Despite a few poor performances early in the season, Brady closed the year out strong and pushed the Buccaneers into the playoffs. He finished the season with over 4,600 yards and 40 touchdowns.
No. 6 | Deshaun Watson, Houston Texans
Watson signed a massive four-year, $156 million contract extension last offseason. Despite the Texans missing the playoffs this season, Watson has been a top quarterback this season. He finished first in passing yards (4,823), while also adding 33 passing touchdowns and 432 rushing yards.
No. 5 | Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks
After starting the year a front-runner for MVP, Wilson has struggled with turnovers and thus falls farther down this list. Regardless of recent performances, his stats this season are very good. Through 16 games, Wilson had over 4,200 yards and 40 touchdowns.
No. 4 | Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals
Similarly to Wilson, Murray started the year on fire, however, turnover problems have pushed his rank back. The combination of rushing and passing have given defenses problems guarding Murray and the Cardinals all season long. He tallied just under 4,000 yards and 26 touchdowns through the air, while adding another 800 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground.
No. 3 | Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills
Allen quietly moved up the MVP race throughout the season. He started playing very well, had a few rough games, and then closed the season out strong. Allen’s 4,544 passing yards and 37 touchdowns, plus another eight rushing touchdowns helped the Bills win the AFC East for the first time since 1995.
No. 2 | Patrick Mahomes , Kansas City Chiefs
Mahomes put together another MVP worthy season, throwing for over 4,700 yards (second-best) and 38 touchdowns. Mahomes and the Chiefs earned the number one seed in the AFC and could be on their way to back-to-back Lombardi Trophies.
No. 1 | Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers
When the Packers selected quarterback Jordan Love early in the draft, Rodgers took it personally and put together one of the best campaigns of his career. Aside from throwing over 4,300 yards, he finished first in both passing touchdowns (48) and fewest interceptions (5). Rodgers is the favorite to win MVP and has helped the Packers secure a first round bye in the playoffs. Even at 37 years old, Rodgers is the top quarterback in the league.
