Kansas City Chiefs vs. Jacksonville? Jaguars: Recap and Highlights

The Kansas City Chiefs faced the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sept. 8 in Week 1 of the 2019 NFL season. Here are highlights from the game.

Entering this game, people expected to see an interesting matchup between Tyreek Hill and Jalen Ramsey, and an interesting showdown between the Chiefs’ offense and the Jaguars’ defense in general. We were also ready for the return of Patrick Mahomes and the emergence of Nick Foles.

Things didn’t quite go as planned.

Hill wound up hauling in just a pair of passes for 16 years before exiting the game with a shoulder injury; he was later ruled out. Sammy Watkins took over as the No. 1 wideout and he and hauled in nine passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns — an impressive showing for Watkins, who came up clutch.

Nick Foles suffered a fractured clavicle and was ruled out. Foles completed five of eight pass attempts for 75 yards and a touchdown. He was replaced by rookie Gardner Minshew, who was drafted in the sixth round of the draft. Minshew was off to a super hot start, completing his first 16 passes without a single incompletion. He ended up finishing 22-for-25 with 275 yards and two touchdowns, plus an interception.

Other notable stats include those of Patrick Mahomes (25-for-33, 378 yards, three touchdowns), LeSean McCoy (10 rushes, 81 yards), Damien Williams (13 rushes, six receptions, 65 scrimmage yards, touchdown), Travis Kelce (three receptions, 88 yards), Leonard Fournette (13 rushes, four receptions, 94 scrimmage yards), D.J. Chark (four catches, 146 yards, touchdown), Chris Conley (six catches, 97 yards, touchdown), and Dede Westbrook (five catches, 30 yards, touchdown).

Parting Words

Momentum is key. It just looks like one game in the standings, but mentally, there is a huge difference between an 0-1 start and a 1-0 start. The Chiefs become one of (what will soon be) 16 undefeated teams, a number that will decrease next week as the Chiefs hope to advance to 2-0.
