The defending Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, became the third NFL team to sign a player from the revamped XFL.
Jordan Ta’amu, the quarterback for the XFL’s St. Louis Battlehawks, signed with the Chiefs on Monday evening, according to his agent.

This move follows P.J. Walker’s decision to sign with the Carolina Panthers after time with the Houston Roughnecks, as well as Roughnecks cornerback Deatrick Nichols’s deal to join the New Orleans Saints.
Ta’amu transferred to the Mississippi State University football program in 2017 after spending his first two years of collegiate football playing for the New Mexico Military Insitute. Ta’amu went to Missippi State with the knowledge he would back up starting quarterback Shea Patterson. However, Patterson sustained a leg injury, and Ta’amu started the last five games of the 2017 season.
Ta’amu appeared in seven games in 2017 and completed 115 of 173 attempts for 1,682 yards, 11 touchdowns and four interceptions for an impressive 164.5 rating. In 2018, he played in all 12 games and completed 266 of 418 attempts for 3,918 yards, nine touchdowns, and eight interceptions for a 153.5 rating. At the conclusion of his collegiate career, Ta’amu had a 156.8 rating.
Ta’amu went undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft and spent some preseason time with the Houston Texans before signing with the Battlehawks. The XFL season was forced to end early due to the COVID-19 outbreak, allowing Ta’amu to test NFL free agency.
In his five games with the Roughnecks, he completed 97 of 134 attempts for 1,050 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions for a 101.3 rating.
This performance was enough for the Chiefs’ recruitment to take notice and sign Ta’amu to their team.
Could he secure a spot as backup to Patrick Mahomes, or is Kanas City just stacking the depth chart?
