Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has finalized his defensive coaching staff just ahead of the 2019 NFL combine, which kicks off on March 1st.
The Kansas City Chiefs moved on from defensive coordinator Bob Sutton following their loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots in January.
“After a thorough process, we are happy to finalize our defensive coaching staff.”
– Andy Reid, per a team release
Excluded from the team’s release were secondary coach Al Harris and defensive backs coach Emmit Thomas, who announced his retirement nearly a week ago. This confirms the speculation that new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo would bring in his own staff members.
The only carry over from Sutton’s coaching staff will seemingly be defensive line coach (and Reid’s son) Britt Reid.
Ried will shift the outside linebacker position in Spagnuolo’s 4-3 under defensive scheme.
The announcement highlighted the coaching staff as follows:
Steve Spagnuolo – Defensive coordinator
Brendan Daly – Run game coordinator/defensive line
Matt House – Linebackers
Dave Merritt – Defensive backs
Sam Madison – Defensive backs/cornerbacks
Britt Reid – Linebackers/outside linebackers
Terry Bradden – defensive quality control
Alex Whittingham – defensive assistant
With the coaching staff now finalized, the Chiefs will turn to the franchise tag discussions; seemingly pointing towards edge rusher Dee Ford being franchise tagged for the 2019 season.
