Kansas City Chiefs: 3 Takeaways from the Packers Game

Kansas City Chiefs: Takeaways from the Packers Game

The Kansas City Chiefs played their third and last preseason game against the Green Bay Packers. Looking at the game, the Chiefs’ coaches and staff must be happy with what they witnessed.

While not perfect, the depth of the Chiefs roster is something to be proud of, especially when not all teams have the depth they need. Looking at the players who comprise the second, third, and even fourth liners across all three preseason games, they showed growth and promise. Nevertheless, Kansas City has some hard decisions to make to get the roster to 53 by August 30, 2022. Let us take a look at a few reasons why there might be difficulty with making decisions after the game with Green Bay.

Strong Showing for Shane Buechele

Buechele played a good game against the Packers, making a solid case to get Andy Reid to add him to the roster as the third quarterback. Coaches and staff can see the possibility of him eventually being the backup to Patrick Mahomes. If something were to happen to Mahomes and Chad Henne, having Buechele in with the starting lineup would be an adequate substitute, although not ideal.

Is it possible for Buechele to beat out Henne as the backup this season? No. Not unless Reid wants to take a chance. Despite there not being a true fight for the backup positions, Buechele showed improvement from game one against the Chicago Bears and game two against the Washington Commanders. Against the Packers, Buechele completed 11 of 17 passes for 166 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

If he doesn’t beat out Henne for QB2 this season, if he keeps improving, then there is no reason why he would not be the backup for Mahomes next season.

Two Players’ Last Ditch Efforts to Make the Roster

Ronald Jones

He carried the ball eight times for 43 yards against the Packers and had more opportunities in this game than in the previous two. While the offensive side is a little crowded with talent, Jones put full effort into being noticed on the field, making a difference when it counted. But will it be enough to earn him a roster spot? It is hard to know, especially with the plethora of talent the Chiefs have. However, Jones has shown to excel at running between the tackles, and the Chiefs could use a player to help run it up the middle.

Corey Coleman

Against the Packers, Coleman had a 45-yard kickoff return and three punt returns totaling 47 yards. The Chiefs need a good return specialist. They might be able to have him on the roster and utilize him in other situations and plays. While he is not a lock to make the roster, he has shown consistency in his efforts on the field, which may tip the scales in his favor.

Looking Good on Both Sides of the Ball

If anyone has doubted the Chiefs, especially in light of last season and the loss of a few roster players, then doubt no more. Though Mahomes did not play, it is not hard to see he will have many weapons at his disposal. They will more than make up for the loss of someone like Tyreek Hill; though he is irreplaceable, the show must go on. George Karlaftis is looking good on defense, despite being a rookie, and Justin Reid looks like he has been here his whole career.

While not perfect, there is still a bit of time between now and the start of the season. Time for a few of those on the injury list to possibly get a little bit better and more time to get into the routine of a season. If speed is the name of the game, then the Chiefs have kicked it up a notch, and once the season starts, we will see how they will roll over other teams.
