Monday on the Double Coverage podcast that’s hosted by the New England Patriots’ and twin brothers, Devin and Jason McCourty, former Titans and current Broncos defensive lineman, Jurrell Casey said that the way the trade went down between the Titans and Broncos after nine seasons in Tennessee felt like they were throwing him away like a piece of trash.
The Quotes
“The part that is so crazy is that you give so much to them. Especially when you come upon free agency and have opportunities to go somewhere else. Especially the way it was going when we were there, 2-14, 3-13,” Casey said. “Those were some rough times. When you’re a loyal guy and you feel like things are going in the right direction and you’re that centerpiece, you got no choice but to fight it through. My mindset was to stick it out and things would get better.”
Casey continued “For us to get to that point to get better and to be a main focus of that and then you just throw me away to the trash like I wasn’t a main block of that … coming off an injury the year before and playing the whole season for ya’ll. No complaints, I did everything you wanted me to do and you throw me away like a piece of trash. At the end of the day, none of these businesses are loyal.” Casey was a five-time Pro Bowl selection during his Titans career and signed a four year, $60 million contract extension with Tennessee in 2017.
The Impact
The better days Casey referred to came last season and the Titans magical playoff run to the AFC Championship Game. A run that featured upsets over the Patriots and the Super Bowl favorites the Ravens. The Titans cleared up just over $11 million in cap space by trading Casey to the Broncos for a seventh-round draft selection. Casey said he was working out when he got a call from his agent that the Titans were going to shop him to other teams. He was disappointed that he didn’t hear the news from the team.
“It was a blow to the heart because I would have thought that one of them would have hit me up,” Casey said. “The part that hurt me the most was that I didn’t get a call until like 30 seconds before the trade went down. For three or four days I had some moments where I had to tell the wife to give me a minute and I had a lot of tears come out of there.”
The Revenge?
Casey doesn’t have to wait long to get some measure of revenge on his former team. The Broncos host his former team the Titans to open the season in the second opening week game on Monday Night Football.
Although Casey’s season-high in sacks is 10.5, his impact on the defensive front often garnered double teams, allowing other players to get through to the opposing quarterback or to stymie the opposing running back.
