The Jets went into the offseason with needs on the offensive line, receiving corps, the defensive backfield, and overall depth. General manager Joe Douglas has completed almost all of those via free agency and the draft.
The Jets revamped their offensive line pre-draft in a big way, signing Alex Lewis, Connor McGovern, George Fant, and Greg Van Roten to multi-year contracts. They added to their receiving corps with the addition of speedy Breshad Perriman. They upheld their defense with Jordan Jenkins and the signing of Pierre Desir. Then, during the draft, they selected a stud offensive lineman in Mekhi Becton from Louisville and also drafted a star receiver who surprisingly slipped to pick No. 59 after trading out of pick No. 48.
That receiver is Baylor star, Denzel Mims.
Mims now will join Breshad Perriman and Jamison Crowder as the top targets for Sam Darnold. The Jets will also have that revamped offensive line and Le’Veon Bell to give their offense a dynamic look.
Mims, 22, played his whole college career for the Baylor Bears. He is a crafty player who can fight off the snap and push his way to the target position. He stands at 6-foot-3 and 206 pounds but sports blazing speed. Mims ran a 4.38-second 40-yard dash, which is phenomenal. He has great hands that allow him to catch throws that may not be that precise. He also has an ability to fight off defensive backs, which is a great complement to his speed.
Mims uses his frame to get off to the races really well with his ability to box out defenders really well. He is a great route reader and has a great football IQ. He is able to switch directions fairly well, launch into the air to snatch balls away from defensive backs, and create some special separation, making him a great tool for Adam Gase to use.
Mims truly appears to be Sam Darnold’s instant best friend. The Jets need to make sure that Darnold is comfortable and they have done so with revamping the offensive line, getting a star running back, and now getting him a wideout that plays to his strengths in a truly amazing way.
Following his selection, Mims expressed his desire to prove all the teams that passed up on him wrong as well as some other items. He said he is excited to go to New York, praised the Jets’ draft class, and vowed to be Sam Darnold’s best friend and couldn’t wait to give him a call.
Denzel Mims truly seems to be a great choice by the Jets brass.
