The Jacksonville Jaguars have released veteran running back Leonard Fournette, according to an announcement from the team.
The Jaguars tried to trade Fournette this offseason but clearly failed to orchestrate a swap, thus forcing them to cut him.
A 2017 first-round pick, Fournette appeared in 36 games over three seasons, recording 666 carries for 2,631 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also added 134 catches for 1,009 yards and an additional two touchdowns through the air.
Fournette will now be subject to waivers, allowing teams to claim him before he hits free agency. He’s due $4,167,393 in the last year of his rookie deal this season, meaning he’s likely to garner interest from several teams and probably won’t reach free agency.
Second-year back Ryquell Armstead will take over lead duties in the Jacksonville backfield while Chris Thompson, formerly of the Washington Football Team, will see the majority of passing down reps. Devine Ozigbo has also impressed during training camp and could cut into Armstead’s share of touches.
