Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Houston Texans: Recap and Highlights

The Jacksonville Jaguars faced the Houston Texans on Sept. 15 in Week 2 of the 2019 NFL season. Here are highlights from the game.

The Jacksonville Jaguars entered this game after a crushing Week 1 loss in which they lost Nick Foles to the IR after he suffered a fractured clavicle. Meanwhile, the Texans also lost in Week 2 after a devastating Wil Lutz field goal gave the Saints the win in the teams’ Week 1 matchup on Monday.

Today’s matchup started off slow. Of the first eight drives, seven resulted in a punt. (The one oddball was a Texans field goal.) Four of those punts belonged to the Jaguars and three were the Texans’. Then the Jaguars had a 10-play drive resulting in a field goal, but the Texans answered with a 11-play drive that also ended in a field goal, making it 6-3 Houston.

The Texans and Jaguars then combined for five straight drives ending in a punt before the sixth drive saw a Jaguars fumble. That allowed the Texans to take over and score a touchdown early in the fourth quarter, making it 13-3. The Jaguars then hit a field goal, the Texans punted, and Jacksonville got the ball pick with a couple minutes left in a scenario where a touchdown would tie it.

Jacksonville’s rookie quarterback Gardner Minshew connected with D.J. Chark to cap off a huge drive — a scoring drive. But wait, there’s more (or perhaps less). Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone decided to go for two after Minshew’s impressive drive. And they failed. Leonard Fournette’s rush went for one yard as he came up shy of the goal line. The Jaguars, trailing by one, attempted an onside kick but it was unsuccessful. The Texans ran out the clock and picked up the 13-12 win.

Deshaun Watson finished 16-for-29 for 159 yards. While he didn’t throw for a touchdown or interception, he did run in for a score. Carlos Hyde led the Texans’ running game as he picked up 90 yards on 20 carries. Duke Johnson, Jr. had six carries for 31 yards. DeAndre Hopkins (five catches) and Will Fuller V (four catches) each had 40 receiving yards. Ka’imi Fairbairn hit two field goals, while J.J. Watt forced a fumble and Justin Reid recorded two sacks.

Gardner Minshew finished 23-for-33 with a touchdown while passing for 213 yards. He also scrambled for 56 yards on six carries, topping Leonard Fournette who had 15 carries for 47 yards. Chris Conley had four catches for 73 yards and D.J. Chark hauled in seven passes for 55 yards and a touchdown. Josh Lambo was two-for-two kicking, with his longest kick coming from 40 yards out.
