Jacksonville Jaguars True or False: May Edition

Jacksonville Jaguars true or false: Trevor Lawrence

The NFL Draft is officially in the rearview mirror and a rather successful one for a team that won just one game last season. Now new head coach Urban Meyer and company are moving full steam ahead towards the impending season, with the schedule release slated for May 12th. Here’s the May Edition of Jacksonville Jaguars True or False

Author’s note: This monthly piece will reassess some of the questions from previous installments and new ones will be addressed.

The number one overall pick will have immediate success?

True. More often than not, the quarterback selected number one overall in the NFL Draft has experienced more bust than boom. Tim Couch, Akili Smith, Ryan Leaf, and JaMarcus Russell to name a few, didn’t light up the NFL as they did in college. But if you’ve seen Trevor Lawrence play, it’s hard to believe, the guy who was a lock for the first overall selection over a year ago, will suffer the same fate. The ceiling in year one is low, which is to his benefit. Two or three wins would be an instant improvement, but if the Jaguars, behind Lawrence can finish the season around .500 which is likely, their fan base will be ecstatic.

The new tight end will shock everyone?

True. Former NFL starting quarterback, former minor league baseball player, Tim Tebow, after much speculation is signing with Jacksonville. Tebow will be reuniting with his college coach Urban Meyer and playing tight end. That is something he refused to do at the start of his career, which could have potentially extended his playing days in the NFL, to begin with. Now the 33-year-old will look to have an impact, which for any other player would seem unlikely, but because he’s Tim Tebow, it’s got to be believed that he will have success. He could also be an early favorite for Comeback Player of the Year.

Their now crowded backfield will complement each other?

False. Last season’s surprise James Robinson, free-agent addition Carlos Hyde, and Lawrence’s Clemson teammate, first-round pick Travis Etienne on paper, look to potentially be one of the top backfields, with a three-headed monster, in the league. But with Lawrence under center, the passing game, if effective, will limit the running play calls, and if you divide that by three it may create tension between them.

Urban Meyer will suffer the same fate as Nick Saban?

False. Similar to quarterbacks selected first overall, college coaches who make the jump to the NFL, have not always had success. Even those who have been successful haven’t reached the extent of their success in the college ranks. Meyer went 17-6 at Bowling Green, 22-2 at Utah, 65-15 at Florida, and 83-9 at Ohio State, for a college coaching record of 187-32. His teams won three national championships, seven conference championships, and 10 division championships. That resume proves he has been a winner at every stop along the way. Jacksonville had him in their sights, as have other NFL teams for years, and they are lucky he finally decided to make the jump.
