It’s Officially Time to be Concerned about Jose Ramirez

It has now been over a calendar year, and Jose Ramirez is not in a “slump” he is just not a good baseball player right now. With Cleveland stumbling out of the gate and having a banged-up rotation, this is not good for the Indians.

If the Indians have any hope of catching the surprise Minnesota Twins, they need their MVP candidate to play to his level. Let’s look back at Ramirez’s unreal season from last year.

In May of 2018, Ramirez hit .336 with 11 home runs and 25 RBI. His numbers slightly dipped in June as he hit .267 with six home runs and 12 RBI. In July, before the all-star break, he hit .357 then, for the rest of the season, he barely hit over .200

Ramirez’s bad second-half from last year has carried over to this year. He is currently hitting .194 with four home runs, 15 RBI and only a 0.1 WAR. He has just been bad offensively. Defensively, he has always been solid, but not gold-glove caliber.

From 2013-2015, Ramirez was an average player, he showed promise, but couldn’t get over that hill. Then he had these unreal 2016-2018 seasons. If you think he is going to break out of this slump, look at these numbers.

Jose Ramirez’s season-by-season oRAR

  • 2013-1
  • 2014-9
  • 2015-9
  • 2016-41
  • 2017-64
  • 2018-74
  • 2019-1

See the problem? Something is wrong with Ramirez, He is trying to kill the ball every at-bat. Which is why he pops out more than anyone. This is a big problem, and he needs to figure it out now.

The Indians do this every year, start off slow, then hit their stride in June. The problem is, the Twins’ annual red-hot start shows no sign of stopping. I still believe the Indians will win the division (no bias) but they need their MVP candidate to play to his level.

I’m officially concerned about not only the Cleveland Indians but also Jose Ramirez.
