With a stud quarterback like Cardinals rookie Kyle Murray coming into the early rounds of training camp, there are a lot of questions to be asked. Murray will be good, there’s no denying it. But how much of an impact will he make on the Cardinals organization?
In the first year of his four-year, $35 million contract, the Cardinals are bound to be relying on him a lot.
During his four years at Texas A&M and Oklahoma, Murray held a 67.4 completion percentage. On top of that, he totaled 50 touchdowns in his college career. He won the Heisman Trophy this past year, which automatically puts him in a select group of football greats. With talent like his, it was not a big surprise that the Cardinals picked him with the first overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft.
As training camp begins, this will be the first real showing of how Murray holds up against the NFL. As a first-round pick in both baseball and football, Murray is trying to prove that he made the right decision. Having already established himself as one of the hardest workers in the NFL, all Murray needs is a support system of targets in front of him. With legendary receiver Larry Fitzgerald as his primary target this season, both Murray and Fitz should post good stats.
If he stays with the Cardinals and can lead them to a little more success than a 3-13 record, Murray will be off well in the first four years of his NFL career. After his contract expires, Murray could either stay with the Cardinals and try and keep turning the organization around, or jump to a more successful team.
Standing at just 5-foot-10, Murray has already faced some skepticism about how he will fare in the NFL. If he can learn to ignore the negative media attention and just focus on his performance, Kyler is going to have an amazing career. Knowing how to avoid the brightest parts of the spotlight and to just play the game he loves will do Murray good.
