The Houston Texans faced the Kansas City Chiefs on Oct. 13, 2019, in Week 6 of the 2019 NFL season. Here is a recap of the game.
Despite the 21 penalties for 149 yards, it was a hard-fought game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Houston Texans. The Chiefs started out well and held the Texans to only three points in the first quarter while amassing 17 points of their own. However, in the second quarter, the tide slowly began to turn in favor of the Texans. They would go into halftime with a 23-17 lead over the Chiefs.
For the second half of the game, fans would only see each of their teams put up two touchdowns overall. One for the Texans, with a two-point conversion, and one for the Chiefs. The Texans did help themselves by keeping the much-maligned Chiefs defense on the field while eating up minutes on the clock. This kept Patrick Mahomes, despite the ankle injury, from staging a last-minute comeback to possibly tie the game.
The final score was 31-24, Texans over the Chiefs.
Recap and Highlights
In the first quarter, Chiefs fans once again saw the magic between Mahomes and Tyreek Hill. Mahomes completed a 46-yard pass to Hill which resulted in a touchdown. Now came Houston’s turn with the ball, but that was negated by a fumble by Carlos Hyde. The result was a field goal for the Chiefs a few plays later. Later in the first Quarter, Ka’imi Fairbairn garnered a field goal for the Texans. Once the Chiefs got the ball back, they took it down the field and Mahomes connected with Damien Williams for another touchdown.
In the second quarter, only the Texans put up points as Deshaun Watson completed an 11-yard pass to Duke Johnson for their first touchdown of the contest. Mahomes threw his first interception of the season, and it was intercepted by Tashaun Gipson, giving the ball back to the Texans. Later, Hyde would find his way into the endzone to give the Texans their second touchdown of the game.
The Chiefs got the ball back but ended up missing a 50-yard field goal. Later on, with 39 seconds left in the second quarter, Watson was intercepted by Juan Thornhill. Instead of kneeling to allow time to start to run out or executing any type of running play, Mahomes was sacked by Charles Omenihu, which caused a fumble and was recovered by the Texans at the Kansas City three-yard line. Watson was able to make it into the end zone again for another touchdown, giving the Texans a 23-17 lead going into half time.
The second half of the game was really a back and forth possession game. Mahomes did connect with Hill again in the third quarter for another touchdown, but that was as good as the Chiefs would be. Fans will blame the lackluster performance of the Chiefs on Mahomes’s ankle injury, but their porous defense also deserves some of the blame. They allowed the Texans to not only score the fourth quarter but also allowed Watson to connect with DeAndre Hopkins for the two-point conversion.
The win over the Chiefs makes two wins in a row for the Texans, giving their egos a boost for their upcoming game against the Indianapolis Colts. It will make for an interesting AFC South Division match-up. For the Chiefs, it’s a short week as they take on the Denver Broncos Thursday night in an AFC West Division matchup. The question on everyone’s mind will be about Mahomes and his injured ankle, and if it will contribute to a less than stellar performance by the Chiefs offense against the 2-4 Broncos.
