On Sunday, Hideki Matsuyama beat Russell Henley in a playoff hole to secure another dramatic victory. Coming off a strong 2021, including a Masters win, Matusyama continues his reign of dominance. At the Sony Open, Matsuyama posted a score of 23-under, tying Henley and forcing a playoff. On his second stroke from 276-yards out, Matsuyama laced a 3-wood to three feet from the cup. It was a walk-off eagle that set golf-twitter ablaze, and is likely in contention for shot of the season.
UNREAL SHOT. 😳

Facing a five-stroke deficit at the turn, the chances for Matsuyama seemed slim. Though his odds were bleak, his cool and collected demeanor would guide him to a 72-hole tie with Henley. From there, the rest is history as Matsuyama’s blind shot into the sun would set him up to win the event.
Recent success
Matsuyama has been ranked in the OWGR’s top-10 for the better part of seven years. Although his name isn’t as well-known as the Jon Rahm’s and Jordan Spieth’s of the world, his game can match. Bolstered by a win at the Zozo Championship late last year, the 29-year old has been on a tear. Racking up another win at Waialae Country Club on Sunday placed him with K.J. Choi as co-leader in wins on tour as an Asian-born player (eight).
Looking Forward
This year will bring a lot of warranted attention to the 2021 green jacket holder. Matsuyama has placed himself amongst the most premier players the game has to offer. Stacking $37 million in the bank since his career began, the Sony Open champion is no stranger to top finishes. Prepare for a monster year from Matsuyama, as he continues to light the golf world on fire, while perpetually giving Choi night terrors.
