Herro: Kentucky really prepared me for Miami

The Miami Heat have drafted very well over the past few seasons, and Kentucky basketball has a lot to do with it. In 2017, the Heat selected Kentucky center Bam Adebayo with the 14th overall pick. Two years later, the Heat selected guard  Tyler Herro with the No. 13 overall pick last summer. Both players have been huge for the Heat’s success this season.

As a rookie this season, Herro was averaging 12.9 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game while shooting 39.1 percent from beyond the arc. Herro also showed some upside as a shot creator. On CJ McCollum’s Pull Up podcast, the young rookie credited the Kentucky program for preparing him for the NBA.

“I think Kentucky really prepared me for Miami, Herro said. “I think the way that coach Cal [John Calipari] pretty much just prepares his players and what he puts them through as far as development and things like that, after one year he kind of prepared me for coach Spo and Pat Riley and the conditioning and practices. Miami is a place that if you like to work, then it’s good for you. Because I feel like they hold you to a higher standard.”

The Heat really values Herro, who was made untouchable in trade talks at the February trade deadline. Herro has been one of the best rookies this season and has been a key piece in Miami’s resurgence this season. If a superstar talent becomes available, Tyler could be available, but for now Miami seems him as a franchise cornerstone.
