The 2022 NFL preseason is rapidly approaching, with team practices growing more intense by the day. Coming off an offseason for the ages that changed not only the complexion of individual teams, but both the AFC and NFC as a whole. Many things will look quite different from a season ago. It’s the perfect time for the fourth annual edition of Three Burning Questions. As is years past, this 32-part series will look at the three most pressing questions facing each of the 32 teams. They Added Who to the Defense?
The defense in Pittsburgh had been consistently among the elite units in the NFL prior to last season. Then, it dropped to below the middle of the pack . After being a salary cap casualty in Jacksonville, linebacker Myles Jack was quickly snatched by the Steelers. Jack will play alongside the perennial defensive player of the year nominee T.J. Watt and Devin Bush to make them one of the best in the league on paper.
Life Without Big Ben?
For the first time since the Steelers drafted him eleventh overall in the 2004, someone other than Ben Roethlisberger will be the starting quarterback Week 1. The six time Pro Bowl selection and two time Super Bowl Champion retired at season’s end. Former Chicago Bears starting quarterback Mitch Trubisky, who spent last season in Buffalo backing up Josh Allen, will likely compete for the starting job. First round pick Kenny Pickett out of the University of Pittsburgh will make his case to earn the top spot on the depth chart. If it were up to the majority of the fanbase it’ll be Pickett. Meanwhile Trubisky is used to the naysayers and has been through a weekly competition in his last season-and-a-half with the Bears. Head coach Mike Tomlin’s decision for Week 1 likely won’t be set in stone.

Reason for Hope or a Pipe Dream?
The AFC North division has changed its entire complexion in just a few sorry seasons. The defending AFC Champion Cincinnati Bengals and the new-look Cleveland Browns are no longer the doormats vying for a top five pick year-in and year-out. The Baltimore Ravens (like the Steelers) will go as far as their defense will take them. If Watt and company can get back to a dominant defense, this team and this division will be a dogfight all season. Pittsburgh has as much of a legitimate shot as the other three teams to win this division.
