The 2022 NFL preseason is rapidly approaching, with team practices growing more intense by the day. Coming off an offseason for the ages that changed not only the complexion of individual teams but both the AFC and NFC as a whole. Many things will look quite different from a season ago. It’s the perfect time for the fourth annual edition of Three Burning Questions. As in years past, this 32-part series will look at the three most pressing questions facing each of the 32 teams. Here are the Three Burning Questions for the New York Giants.

The End of the Daniel Jones Era?
The Number Six overall selection in the 2019 NFL Draft showed promise in his rookie season, a season in which he also took his lumps. Since then Jones has been inconsistent and has had his bevy of injuries. The fans have soured on him rather quickly, which in New York is often the case. The team has also seemed to follow the lead of many of their fans, as they decided to decline the fifth-year option on Jones this offseason. The Giants added Tyrod Taylor to their quarterback depth chart in free agency. Taylor has had quite the streak of bad luck of his own in recent seasons and is hoping for his opportunity, which can come early in the season. Speculation was that the Giants also inquired about another veteran signal-caller via trade, although to this point it has not come to fruition.
Are Saquon Barkley’s Best Days Behind Him?
Running back Barkley made a splash in his rookie season when he rushed for over 1,300 yards. Since then he has suffered a high ankle sprain which hampered his sophomore season as it lingered all season. In Week 2 of 2020, he tore his ACL and missed the rest of the season. Often when running backs start battling leg issues they are never the same. Veteran back Matt Breida was added to the backfield depth chart, but the hopes are that Barkley can get back to some resemblance of his rookie self. That would also help his quarterback whether it’s Jones or Taylor.
Can the Defense Build off of Their Few High Points of Last Season?
As a unit, the Giants’ defense was in the bottom third of the league, which isn’t a shock for a team that was 4-13. But despite that rank, they showed glimpses of a borderline stout defense. With a new head coach in Brian Daboll who is offense-oriented, he will hold the defense accountable and get the most out of them. Expect a big season out of cornerback Adoree’ Jackson in the secondary who will take his chances in pass coverage, especially if Leonard Williams, Dexter Lawrence, and company up front can get pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
