Heller’s 5 Bold Predictions: NFC East

NFC East

NFL fans, rejoice. The 2021 season is just on the horizon. It’s the last month without football until March. Regardless of their favorite team, every NFL fan enters this year with optimism. After all, every team is undefeated so far.

While there are a few questions left to be answered around the league, it’s never too early for bold predictions for each of the NFL’s eight divisions. Here are those predictions for the NFC East.

The Easiest Job in the Division

The NFC East division is not for a lack of storylines after a dismal 2020 season in which it seemed nobody wanted to win the division until Week 17. With stars like Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott and New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley suffering serious injuries to the Philadelphia Eagles picking Jalen Hurts over Carson Wentz, last season truly had it all. The Washington Football Team won this division last season thanks to its stellar defense, and they are now led by a new quarterback. Gritty journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick will benefit from the defense tremendously. He will reward their efforts by putting points on the scoreboard.

Show and Prove

Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is in a make-or-break year, similar to former stadium-mate Sam Darnold‘s role last season with the New York Jets. Although all of the blame of last season can’t rest solely on his shoulders, Jones does bear some of it. The defense kept them in games, but the offense couldn’t capitalize. Kenny Golladay, John Ross, and Kyle Rudolph were brought in this offseason. Plus, Barkley will be back, although it’s unclear if he will be ready for Week 1. Jones has enough weapons at his disposal that there should be no reason he’s not successful this season.

Return to Form Will Be Slow

The Cowboys are hoping that Dak Prescott will be the MVP-caliber quarterback that he was prior to his gruesome injury last season. The team is confident he can as they gave him a big contract, albeit a year too late. While he is rehabbing well, there will be some lasting effect, whether it’s thinking twice about fighting for that extra yard or two on the sidelines or being a little trigger happy. Prescott will eventually return to form, but it will take him a couple of games to get there. Hopefully, for the team’s sake, his teammates can pick up the slack.

Struggles in Philly

The Eagles are in second-year quarterback Jalen Hurts’s hands. Last season, the rookie’s limited starts didn’t translate to victories. However, in reality, the team looked more energized than when Carson Wentz was under center. In 2021, Hurts will have a tough season. With the defenses in this division alone, he will have to improvise quite often to be successful, which will be a little too much for a guy with his skill set.

Replication of Last Season

This division is Washington’s, just like it was last season. However, this time around, it won’t come down to the final week of the year. The Football Team will accumulate a double-digit win total while the Giants and Cowboys also both have better seasons than last year. New York should even sneak into the playoffs as a Wild Card team. On the other hand, the Eagles will occupy the basement for most of the season while old friend Carson Wentz leads his Colts to the playoffs, causing many to further question this offseason’s Indy-Philly trade.
