Heller Answers 3 Burning Questions: New York Giants

Prior to the 2020 NFL season, three questions were posed for each of the 32 teams. This is the recap and answers to those questions for the New York Giants.

Does Barkley still belong in the conversation of top running backs?

Coming off of an ankle injury, expectations were high for Saquon Barkley to return to the form he was in his debut season. Barkley’s 2020 campaign ended in Week 2 when he tore his ACL against the Chicago Bears, much to the chagrin of fantasy owners that took him second overall.

Early indications are that he will be close to 100 percent by the start of the 2021 season opener. The team is banking on him recovering and remaining one of the premier backs in the league.

What can be expected from Daniel Jones in Year 2?

Jones’ sophomore season was derailed when Barkley went down. The lack of running game forced the offense to rely on the passing game more than they had wanted to. The young quarterback continued to display the toughness he showcased during his rookie season, battling injuries throughout.

Year three will be the true test for Jones. With a healthy Barkley, offensive coordinator Jason Garrett‘s offense will look the way he planned last season.

Did they do enough to address defensive holes?

For a team that won just six games, it was almost single-handedly the defense that had the Giants headed into Week 17 with a chance at making the postseason. The additions of linebacker Blake Martinez and cornerback James Bradberry proved to be two of the better free agent pickups a year ago.

Former Jets defensive tackle Leonard Williams accounted for 11.5 sacks (seventh in the NFL) in his first season for Big Blue. Cornerback Logan Ryan, another key signing, provided some veteran leadership to the secondary. He finished the season with 94 tackles.
