After an offseason full of uncertainty, the Bruins were finally able to agree to an extension with Charlie McAvoy last week.
The Boston University product has quickly become one of the Bruins most important players with Zdeno Chara’s future beyond next year uncertain. Although McAvoy has been a difference-maker, he has missed significant time the past two seasons. With the start of the season only weeks away, the franchise defenseman will be looking to justify the extension and stay healthy.
Furthermore, last year McAvoy appeared in 54 games and was productive when healthy. The Bruins defenseman had 7 goals and 21 goals which were both similar to his rookie season. He also had a knack for coming through in the clutch, as McAvoy had a career-high three game-winning goals. Along with Zdeno Chara, the Bruins had a formidable pairing leading the defense.
Although McAvoy had a successful season, his offensive numbers took a slight step in the wrong direction. After recording seven points on the power play in his rookie campaign, he had only two last season. He finished with just 28 points overall but was still able to score seven goals. The main cause of his decreased production, however, can be tied to injuries.
Additionally, last season McAvoy dealt concussions and a heart condition that required surgery. While injuries like his heart condition are impossible to avoid, missing time has become a theme so far in his career. McAvoy also struggled upon his return last year but was able to regain his form when it mattered most.
In 23 postseason games, the New York native had two goals and six assists. After only scoring one power-play goal in the regular season, he doubled that in the playoffs. As the games became more critical, McAvoy stepped up is play and saw an increase in ice time. That came as no surprise since McAvoy has thrived in the postseason so far his career.
With McAvoy’s future solidified the talented defenseman can now focus on helping the Bruins get back to Stanley Cup Final. This upcoming season more than ever it will be up to young players such as Jake DeBrusk, David Pastrnak, Brandon Carlo, and McAvoy to bring this team to the next level. It is a role however that these players are prepared for.
Ever since McAvoy made his NHL debut, the young defenseman has become the face of the franchise. Although his new deal is shorter than expected, it shows the Bruins faith in the New York native. His offensive numbers were down last year but had he stayed healthy, McAvoy would have surpassed his rookie totals with relative ease. The Bruins expect him to lead this team for years to come, but staying healthy will be a major part.
