We are getting closer to the midway point in the season, which means that key games and the trade deadline are right around the corner.
This season is the epitome of the phrase “any given Sunday.”
For example, the Detroit Lions beat the Chiefs, then got destroyed by the Baltimore Ravens. The Buffalo Bills won against the Miami Dolphins, then lost to the New England Patriots. The Dolphins went toe-to-toe with the team of the week, the Philadelphia Eagles.
A.J. Brown MVP?
A.J. Brown has been a monster for the Eagles. In each of his last five games, Brown has eclipsed 125 yards. Versus a good Dolphins defense, he had 10 receptions for 137 yards and one touchdown. I know it’s unlikely that a non-quarterback wins MVP. Nevertheless, Brown deserves serious consideration for at OPOY, if not MVP.
Jalen Hurts is Wheeling and Dealing
Jalen Hurts has thrown for over 200 yards in each of the past five games. In a modern-day NFL full of great defenses, this is outright impressive. On Sunday night, Hurts went 23-for-31 with 279 yards and two passing touchdowns (to Brown and Dallas Goedert). He also tossed one interception.
Philadelphia Lockdown Defense
Philadelphia played lights-out defense versus one of the best offenses in the league. They held Tyreek Hill (the fastest player in the league) to 88 yards. Jaylen Waddle only had 63 yards in this matchup. Darius “Big Play” Slay certainly made some big plays, adding four tackles and one interception. Terrell Edmunds had a fantastic performance with eight solo tackles and one assist before being traded to the Titans on Monday. The Eagles’ defensive line was able to take down Tua Tagovailoa three separate times (Josh Sweat twice and rookie Nolan Smith once).
NFL Standings
Currently, the Eagles are tied with Kanas City Chiefs for the best record in the NFL. They also have sole possession of first place in the NFC following the 49ers’ loss on Monday night. Philadelphia also got a little security in the playoff race with the Lions losing.
Honorable Mention
This honorable mention goes to the Baltimore Ravens, who demolished the Detroit Lions by a score of 38-6. Lamar Jackson had one of the best performances perhaps since his MVP season in 2019. The talented signal-caller went 21 of 27 for 367 yards and three touchdowns, and he also added nine rushes for 36 yards. This is the offense that Baltimore fans have been craving.
