Franchy Cordero Off to Impressive Start

Franchy Cordero

Through the first week of the season, the Boston Red Sox offense has been one of the best in baseball. The team has won four straight and outscored their opponents, 33-12, in that span. One player who has been key to their success is Franchy Cordero. The 26-year-old has only appeared in six games for the Red Sox, but he is quickly becoming a fan favorite. Cordero has been hard to keep out of the lineup while filling Andrew Benintendi’s role.

In 16 at-bats this season, Cordero is hitting .313. The Dominican native has also driven in three runs and has two doubles. He has shown a flair for the dramatic and has come through in a couple of clutch moments so far. While Cordero has not started every game, he has found a way to contribute whenever his name is called.

Additionally, Cordero has made an impact defensively. On April 7 against Tampa Bay, he made a leaping catch in front of the Green Monster. Tampa Bay was leading at the time and would have added more run support. Instead, Cordero’s catch gave Boston the momentum and kept the game in reach. In the first week of the season, it was one of the club’s top moments.

As the season continues, Cordero’s play will be a key storyline to watch. Before arriving in Boston, he was seen as a player full of potential that struggled to stay healthy. Through his first four major league seasons, he has never appeared in more than 40 games. In his first week with Boston, however, he is showing the type of impact he can make. He will, however, have to work on his plate discipline. In 16 at-bats so far this season, he has seven strikeouts.

What to expect from Cordero

Due to his start, Cordero will find his name in the lineup often over the next few weeks. Although he has yet to hit a home run, Cordero has had an impressive approach at the plate. The Red Sox outfielder is using the whole field as two of his hits have been to the opposite field. He is also making hard contact and seemingly has a big hit every game. After missing most of Spring Training, Cordero has made a good first impression with his new team.

While the season is far from over, the Red Sox bats have been unstoppable in their last four games. Hitting has been contagious, and Cordero has helped spark the offense. If he can continue his success, he could become a permanent fixture in the outfield.
