Week 7 of the 2021 NFL season is in the books. For the majority of the league, Tuesday morning brings a whole new week of football and preparing for their next game. However, a handful of players might not want to leave Week 7 so soon. Here’s a look at who impressed and who underachieved this week.
All point totals are based on PPR scoring.
Quarterback
Winner: Joe Burrow (32.64 FPTS)
Burrow put on a show in Week 7, leading the Bengals to a commanding divisional win over the Ravens. The second-year quarterback out of LSU finished the day with 416 passing yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. Some fantasy managers may have seen an additional scoring boost considering two of his touchdown passes went for at least 40 yards. Last year’s No. 1 pick remains quite fantasy relevant ahead of a Week 8 clash with the Jets.
Co-Losers: Justin Fields (1.16 FPTS) and Sam Darnold (2.44 FPTS)
There’s a first time for everything. Here, we crown two co-losers at the quarterback position. Fields had a terrible week against a porous Buccaneers defense, becoming the first player to be responsible for five turnovers in one game since Darnold in 2019. Speaking of Darnold, he faltered, too. The Panthers’ signal-caller threw for just 111 yards, zero touchdowns, and a pick before being benched in favor of P.J. Walker.
Running Back
Winner: Alvin Kamara (33.9 FPTS)
Kamara was the entirety of the Saints’ offense on Monday night, totaling 30 touches, 179 scrimmage yards, and one touchdown against the Saints. This was the dual-threat back’s best game of the season, vaulting him into the RB1 position this week. Despite a tricky matchup against the Buccaneers last week, Kamara’s versatility puts him into the top-five running back range next week.
Loser: Mike Davis (1.0 FPTS)
Davis continued to cede rushing duties to Cordarrelle Patterson, carrying the ball just four times for 10 yards. After seeing a steady production of at least 10.2 fantasy points through the first five weeks of the season, the former Panthers back’s usage decreased drastically against Miami. It’s not enough to warrant dropping him, but Patterson is clearly making it hard to rely on Davis.
Wide Receiver
Winner: Cooper Kupp (37.6 FPTS)
The fantasy football WR1 did it again, catching 10 passes for 156 yards and two touchdowns. The wideout has now posted at least 30.6 fantasy points in four of seven games this season, putting him in elite territory. Kupp is a pleasure to watch on a weekly basis and will have another favorable matchup against the Texans next week. Fantasy managers should fire him up on a weekly basis regardless of opponent.
Loser: Allen Robinson (3.6 FPTS)
Week 7 represented a get-right opportunity for Robinson, who had struggled through his first six games. However, the veteran wideout was unable to come through despite playing against one of the worst secondaries in football. Whether the blame can be placed on Robinson or Fields is open to discussion, but the bottom line is that Robinson failed in his last chance to bounce back. Fantasy managers should treat him as a WR4 going forward.
Tight End
Winner: C.J. Uzomah (24.1 FPTS)
Uzomah put on a show this week, totaling 91 yards and two touchdowns (including an impressive 55-yarder). He has not been the definition of consistency this year, but his starting role in a very strong Bengals offense gives him mid-range TE2 value, at the very least. Fantasy managers in a bind should feel more than comfortably starting Uzomah against the Jets in Week 8.
Loser: O.J. Howard (1.9 FPTS) and Cameron Brate (0.0 FPTS)
National Tight Ends week was a large success throughout the league, making it hard to find a true loser for this position. If anyone fits the bill, it’s the Tampa Bay tight ends, who combined for just one catch and nine yards. This was a disappointment considering Rob Gronkowski was out and the Bucs’ offense put up a total of 38 points.
Defense
Winner: Tampa Bay Buccaneers (18.0 FPTS)
The Bucs had a big Week 7 showing, racking up five total turnovers (three interceptions and two fumble recoveries) while making Fields look like an absolute fool. Meanwhile, the defense also logged four sacks and held the Bears to just three points. With a preliminary ranking inside the top-five of defenses, they are in line for another solid game against the Saints next week.
Loser: New York Jets (-11.0 FPTS)
The Jets gave up big points to Mac Jones and Damien Harris on Sunday afternoon. They also allowed a Kendrick Bourne passing touchdown, two Brian Hoyer scoring drives, two J.J. Taylor rushing touchdowns, and a 79-yard day from Brandon Bolden. Suffice to say, that is not great. New York will be greeted by an even tougher matchup against the Bengals next Sunday.
