Over the last year, Fabian Lysell has become a familiar name to Bruins fans. The Swedish native was selected by Boston in the first round of the 2021 NHL draft. He has immediately risen to the top of their prospect ranks due to a stellar season in the WHL. While his NHL debut is not expected to come anytime soon, he is providing hope for the Bruins’ future.
In 35 games for the Vancouver Giants this year, Lysell has 41 points, including 18 goals. The 19-year-old has been a constant on the score sheet and dazzled evaluators. He also leads the Giants in goals and points. In his first season of North American hockey, Lysell has continued to improve his game and has not appeared overwhelmed.
Entering the NHL draft, Lysell was known for his speed and playmaking ability. That has been on display over the last few months as he has terrorized opponents. In February, the Bruins’ top prospect had nine points and has been productive in the faceoff circle. He has not been afraid of shooting the puck in the offensive zone and landed 28 shots on net. For a franchise that has struggled to develop forwards of late, Lysell’s play has been a welcoming sign.

How Lysell has benefited from the WHL
Although Lysell still needs more time to develop, he is living up to expectations. Against more physical competition, he has been a scoring machine and thrived in clutch situations with two game-winning goals. As a result, he is getting valuable experience and playing higher in the lineup with Vancouver than he would in Providence.
While the Bruins’ focus is on securing a postseason spot, Lysell’s play with the Giants has been impressive. He has top-six forward potential, which the Bruins do not have an abundance of in Providence. He has not shown any issues adjusting to a smaller rink and is averaging more than a point per game. As the regular season winds down, he will be looking to build on his recent success.
Regardless of what the next few months hold, Lysell has seen his stock rise. He has also drawn some interest with the trade deadline quickly approaching, but it is unlikely that he is dealt. For the Bruins, he is a vital part of the future as they look to sustain their recent success. As he improves his game, Lysell is one Bruins prospect who will be watched closely.
