You can count Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra among those impressed with rookie guard Tyler Herro‘s NBA summer league performance last month. Spoelstra says he loved the way Herro embraced the competition and how eager the guard was to improve his game.

“Tyler embraced the new challenge of Summer League very well. He picked up things very quickly. But the most important things were that he embraced the competition, and he was very open and eager to learn about how we operate. Tyler’s very ambitious, and he has a terrific capacity for work,” Spoelstra told Shandel Richardson of The Athletic.

“He has fit in very well this summer in our player development program. We expected that based on everything we heard about him before the draft. We obviously have big expectations for him, but we know there will be a process to his progress. I like that the high expectations of our franchise and for him bring a higher level of play out of him. It motivates him. He’s a competitor. Those kinds of guys tend to do well with us.”

Herro averaged 19.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 1.5 steals in four games in Vegas. The rookie guard’s 19.8 points per game were second on the Heat behind guard Kendrick Nunn. The most impressive part of Herro’s game was the all-around offensive ability he showed. Aside from just scoring, Herro showed he can make plays for others too.

With training camp just a month away, Herro is expected to compete for regular rotation minutes. There’s been talk of Herro’s defense being a concern given his short wingspan. However, Spoelstra doesn’t see that as a problem.

“There are no obstacles for Tyler going into camp, Spoelstra said. “He just needs to put his head down, work with his teammates, be prepared and learn about our system and culture. If he can help us win, then he will have great opportunities ahead for him.”

If Herro’s summer league performance carries over to the regular season, then Heat fans should expect to see alot of Tyler Herro this upcoming season.
