Ender: McDonagh Trade Could Jeopardize Bruins’ Future

With the NHL trade deadline less than a week away, the Bruins are contemplating whether or not to make a splash, make some minor tweaks, or simply observe.

The Bruins made their first move on Feb. 20, as they traded AHL defenseman Rob O’Gara and a 2018 third round pick to the New York Rangers in exchange for defenseman Nick Holden.

Some reports have surfaced suggesting that the Bruins are interested in Edmonton Oilers forward Patrick Maroon. This kind of trade of rental would be beneficial for the Bruins because it would likely come cheap.

Even more trade buzz has surrounded the Bruins since New York Rangers star defenseman Ryan McDonagh’s name was linked to Boston.

Boston could certainly use another high-quality defenseman, and with one and a half years left on his deal, he would remain on the roster for the 2018-2019 season.

Getting McDonagh would be a huge move for the Bruins, but they need to be careful about what they would give up to get him.

The Rangers have been terrible this season and are set to begin a rebuild after a decade of playoff runs. As a result, the Rangers are going to want picks and young players in return.

This makes things complicated for the Bruins because they are built on youth and their championship window is just beginning to open. To make things even more complicated, New York seems intent on adding Rick Nash to the package of a McDonagh trade, which drives up the price even more.

The Rangers are reportedly interested in Bruins rookie Jake DeBrusk, but trading their rookies isn’t something Boston should even consider.

McDonagh and Nash could both add a lot to this young Bruins team, however, they need to make sure they don’t give up too much to get them.
