In the first inning of Game One of the ALDS on Thursday afternoon between the Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros, a shocking scene unfolded about 10 feet from homeplate.
Eduardo Nunez was supposed to be playing the role of designated hitter in place of Hanley Ramirez in the series opener. But it lasted just one pitch.
On the 9th of September, Nunez injured his knee for the first time during the season. Then on Sept. 25th, he re-aggravated that same knee on his first game back from that prior injury. It seemed like something minor at the time.
He was up and running the bases well on Oct. 3rd, and was likely to be back in time for the playoffs in full health.
Little did anyone know, he was far from ready.
In the first pitch he saw, he hit a ground ball to third. Easy 5-3 force-out.
On the second step out of the batters back, something tweaked within his bad knee and he ended up galloping the rest of the way before he dropped to the ground. He could not get up off of the dirt the under his own power. He needed to be lifted and carried by his manager John Farrell and a trainer.
It was a terrible sight to see.

Nunez will head back to Boston for an MRI.
“We don’t see another damage so far, there’s no swelling, it’s just the same pain it was before,” he said.
