The Eagles made moves in free agency earlier in the week by adding three ex-AAF players. First, they signed Charles Johnson, the AAF’s leading receiver over the course of the 2019 season, and a former member of the Orlando Apollos. Next, they added Luis Perez, who started at quarterback for the Birmingham Iron. Last, they brought in wide receiver Greg Ward, who was somewhat productive as a member of the San Antonio Commanders.
Here is what to expect from each player:
Charles Johnson
Johnson was the leading receiver in the AAF before its premature demise. He finished first in receptions and yards, and second in touchdowns. He was also the league leader in targets.
What it means for the Eagles: Philadelphia gets a reliable veteran to compete right away for a roster spot. Johnson is an excellent possession receiver and has great hands in the red zone. If he makes the roster, look for Johnson to fill the role Jordan Matthews played for the Eagles last season.
Luis Perez
Perez is an interesting add for the Eagles. He struggled at times during the AAF season, but also showed flashes of brilliance. Drops by wide receivers did not help his overall stat line either. Still, Perez ranked third in passing yards and delivered a memorable comeback victory against the San Diego Fleet.
What it means for the Eagles: Philadelphia has a vacancy in their quarterback room, thanks to Nick Foles’ departure. Perez has decent size at 6-3 and 218 pounds. Look for Perez to compete for the third QB spot. With better coaching, he could vie for a backup position.
Greg Ward
This will be Greg Ward’s second stint with Philadelphia. Ward’s AAF stats don’t exactly jump off the page, but he did raise some eyebrows with an electrifying punt return for a touchdown.
What it means for the Eagles: Ward will be competing for a special teams job in Philly. He was on their roster for most of the 2017 season as a practice squad player. If Darren Sproles decides not to return, Ward could very well win the starting punt return job for the Eagles.

I am to Benny! I think it will be a huge boost to other spring football leagues if they succeed.
