Tonight we have flamethrower Gerrit Cole and his 0.82 ERA in September as the easy favorite as the number one starting pitcher, in turn, we will have to find value at SP2 to pay up for Cole. As for bats, the Twins, Cubs, Indians, and Astros are all in good spots and will likely lead the way as popular options to target for offense. Let’s take a trip around the diamond, let’s go Around the Horn!
PITCHER
Adrian Houser MIL $5,300
With Cole being the consensus number one, we need to get creative with our second pitcher. Houser at $5.3K doesn’t seem all that bad. Houser sports a 3.12 ERA at Miller Park this season and his opponent, the Padres, have been quite underwhelming this month. They rank 20th in runs scored with 64 and are hitting just .228 for September. Houser has seen an uptick in production over his last 10 games as he has averaged well over his season-long average of 9 DK pts per game, it sits at 14.9 during the stretch.
INFIELD
Cory Spangenberg MIL 2B $3,500
Let’s continue with the Brew Crew, and let’s save some dough with Cory Spangenberg. Keston Hiura is set to return soon so this could relegate Spangenburg to the bench but he may slide over to short and replace Orlando Arcia. Over his last 14 games, he is hitting .275 with 8 RBI and 6 R. The Brewers are rolling right now with some unlikely contributors stepping up to negate the loss of superstar Christian Yellich.
Luis Arraez MIN 3B/2B $4,100
The Twins will get a juicy matchup tonight as they draw the White Sox and Dylan Covey. In two games this season he is 0-2 with nine earned runs, two walks, and six strikeouts in just six innings of work. Middle infielder Luis Arraez has impressed in his rookie campaign hitting at a .350 clip and he is red hot for the month of September. In 15 games he has scored 10 runs and is hitting an impressive .426.
OUTFIELD
Kyle Schwarber CHC $4,400
The Cubs have been on a run-scoring binge at home until their five-game winning streak was snapped last night against the Cincinnati Reds. Tonight they will look to pounce on starting pitcher Tyler Mahle who has faced the Cubs just once this season, he was tagged for six earned runs in five innings of work. Kyle Schwarber will look to build off of a 4-for-10, one home run line versus Mahle in this one. Prior to last night, Schwarber has been on a very productive groove, over the course of 15 games he is hitting at a .273 clip with 5 HR, 13 R, and 15 RBI. Schwarber also gets a boost from playing at home where he is slashing .268/362/.573, on the road is a different story, his slash line reads .205/.290/.461.
Oscar Mercado CLE $4,600
The Cleveland Indians have absolutely owned the Detroit ‘Tigers this season defeating them 16 out of 17 times this season. They will be primed tonight to tee off at home as each game is now crucial if they want to reach the postseason. The Tigers will turn to Spencer Turnbull tonight. He has been roughed up by the Tribe as he carries a 0-5 record with a 6.48 ERA with 18 k and 8 BB in 25 innings of work. Cleveland is slashing .338/.398/.527 off of the right-hander. Rookie outfielder Oscar Mercado is 5-for-11 with 6 RBI in past plate appearances versus Turnbull. Heading into last night’s contest Mercado has had a fine September, in 14 games this month he is hitting .346 with 7 R and 7 RBI.
Good luck to everyone tonight, keep grinding out those lineups!
