The Green Bay Packers take on division rival Detroit Lions at home for their season opener at Lambeau.

ToggleThe Packers will open the season at home for the first time since 2018, making it the third time in the last four years that Green Bay has opened the season against a division foe. Following the shocking trade with the Dallas Cowboys one week before the start of the season for Micah Parsons, the feel of the season for the Packers now gives off an “all-in” vibe. However, the Lions swept the series against the Packers last season and finished 6-0 overall against the NFC North.
Aidan Hutchinson will play his first game in nearly a year, and Lions fans are looking forward to seeing his comeback after his brutal leg injury. Jared Goff is coming off an MVP-caliber season, so the expectation is there for Goff to continue to dominate his opponents’ defense. On the other side of the ball for Detroit, the defensive line added Tyleik Williams from Ohio State in the first round of April’s draft. Williams was considered one of the best run defenders at his position. It will be fascinating to see how he fares not only in the NFL but against a division rival like the Packers.

Vegas is giving the Packers a chance to prove themselves, especially after the Parsons trade. However, Detroit is the reigning NFC North champion.
What To Watch For
The Lions will still be working out any kinks still hiding after hiring new offensive and defensive coordinators. The preseason appeared to be a little on the not-so-great side, but it is expected that Detroit will find its footing very quickly. They will need to make sure they protect Goff, especially now that the Packers have Parsons.
Detroit only allowed 33 sacks last season, but Parsons has 52.5 sacks through his first four seasons. In addition to the threat Parsons presents to the offense for the Lions, starting three new players along the interior of their offensive line, Graham Glasgow, Christian Mahogany, and rookie Tate Ratledge.
Detroit was also dominant on third downs against the Packers last season; their defense was No. 1 in the NFL on third down last year, allowing just a 32.4% conversion. The offense for the Lions went for it more on their third and fourth downs, giving them the advantage to convert for the first down and continue the drive.
Jordan Love and his young receivers now have experience working together, and if you combine that with the run game that was the strength of its offense a season ago, it should help bring their passing game along. Green Bay’s passing offense struggled to finish last season, and with the “all in” mentality, they will need to improve if they want to attempt a Super Bowl run. Love’s ability to move around in the pocket may allow them to put points on the board. However, they might have to rely on rookie Matthew Golden, thanks to injury issues. It will be a trial by fire, possibly, if the Packers have to rely on him more than usual.
