A tumultuous week for New York Rangers fans continued Wednesday morning as the team announced that David Quinn has been fired as their head coach after three seasons behind the bench.
Quinn Fired By New York Rangers
After finishing the season fifth in the East Division, with a record of 27-23-6, new general manager and president Chris Drury decided that it was time to make a change. In his three seasons as the Rangers head coach, Quinn had a record of 96-87-25, with one postseason appearance last season, where the Rangers were swept by the Carolina Hurricanes in the Stanley Cup Qualifiers. Quinn became the Rangers coach in 2018, replacing Alain Vigneault.
Analysis
This move comes a week after it was announced that president John Davidson and general manager Jeff Gorton were being dismissed, with Drury assuming both roles. It certainly is shocking to see a shakeup this size for the Rangers as it looked as though they were retooling the team quite well. With the breakout performance of Adam Fox, being one of the best offensive defensemen in the NHL, as well as a fantastic season from star winger Artemi Panarin, it looked as though everyone’s jobs in Manhattan was secure. In regards to Quinn’s firing, it is very common for a new general manager to want to bring in a new head coach.
What’s Next?
For the Rangers, Drury has said that the search to find a new coach will begin immediately. As for Quinn, he will join an increasingly competitive head coaching pool that includes fellow end-of-season firings John Tortorella and Rick Tocchet. With some coaches on the hot seat and openings in Columbus and Arizona, Quinn will definitely be getting calls from a few teams. Back to the Rangers side of things, this will be the first big task for Drury as the general manager. It will be interesting to see if he decides to go with an experienced name, like the aforementioned Tortorella and Tocchet. There are also other veteran coaches on the market such as Bruce Boudreau and Claude Julien.
For now, however, the search is just getting started, and with all the surprises the Rangers organization has been throwing at the hockey world, we may see yet another shocking twist from Manhattan.
