David Fizdale’s advice to the Heat this offseason: ‘Don’t chase shiny things’

‘Don’t chase shiny things

After a great run to the NBA Finals, the Miami Heat are gearing up for another run. And they have a busy couple of weeks ahead of them. They have the 20th pick in the NBA Draft, which will be showcased on November 18. Then there’s free agency where they’ll have to decide on key players Goran Dragic and Jae Crowder.

Many people believe the Heat are one player away from competing for titles. The whole league knows they are targeting Giannis Antetokounmpo in next year’s free agency. They also have the option of pursuing a star in the trade market. With that said, former Heat assistant coach David Fizdale offered some suggestions for his former team.

On NBA the Jump, host Rachel Nichols asked Fizdale what should be the Heat’s top priority this offseason. Fizdale believes the Heat’s top priority should be focusing on their free agents.

“I think they got to prioritize those guys right there and figure out which of those guys need to be back into the roster. And a lot of it has to do on price. A lot of those guys can make some good money out in the free-agent market and it’s just a matter of can they come to terms with them to find the right price.”

He then added, “Because they all fit, obviously. This team was right there to win a title but in this offseason, other than that, don’t chase shiny things…wait! Because it is a destination location. Your team has already proven that they can win with what they have. Those young guys are going to be that much better in 2021 and they could go big game hunting.”

It remains to be seen if the Heat will take Fizdale’s advice. The road back to the NBA Finals will be tougher with the Brooklyn Nets getting a healthy Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving back. Another thing to watch for is Giannis’ decision with his extension. If he signs that extension, he’s likely off the market and that could push Miami to make a big move sooner.

Will the team stick with their roster for another year? Or will they look to make a big trade sooner? With the season quickly approaching, we’re about to find out soon.
