Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes: “We need to get to the Super Bowl”

“We need to get to the Super Bowl,” said Patrick Mahomes. “That’s the goal. There’s no other goal.”

At the season’s start, the goal for all NFL teams is to finish the season as Super Bowl Champions. However, the Kansas City Chiefs seem to be on a different level in their pursuit to lift the Lombardi Trophy.

In just his second season as starting quarterback, last years’ league MVP, Patrick Mahomes, explained, “Just winning the Super Bowl is my only goal, honestly. I feel like that was my goal last year and I feel like that’s my goal this year and it will be every year. When you look back on the season at the end of the season, you’re not going to look back at what your stats were or what all that stuff was, you’ll look at whether you’re holding that trophy at the end of the season or not.”

He was obviously disappointed with just barely missing out on the championship. This came after the Chiefs’ heart-breaking overtime loss to the eventual World Champion New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game.

Mahomes lamented, “Yeah, I was itching the day after the AFC Championship Game to get back to football. Watching the Super Bowl, I kind of watched it but at the same time I couldn’t watch it because I was so disappointed that we weren’t there.”

Speaking to reporters at the Chiefs’ first organized team activities on Monday, head coach Andy Reid was much blunter. “We came up a step short, we understand that. This is the first day to start taking care of growth there.”

Tight end Travis Kelce said, “Everybody in this building is ready to get this thing going.”

One of the stumbling blocks to last year’s Super Bowl quest was the Chiefs’ abysmal defense. However, newly acquired safety Tyrann Mathieu assures Chiefs fans that this year’s defense will be different.

“Lotta work to put in, but we will play with energy, attitude & we won’t accept being the lil brother to a high powered offense,” Matthieu tweeted earlier this month.

There can be no doubt: the 2019 Chiefs have a single, solitary goal.

Mahomes sums it up perfectly, “We need to get to the Super Bowl. That’s the goal. There’s no other goal.”
