Champions League Match Day 3 Roundup

Mo Salah Champions League

Matchday 3 of the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League group stage saw several amazing results. Four major European clubs took wins in spectacular fashion. The race for the top spots in Groups A and B remains intense and Real Madrid looks to regain control of their group as they still have a shot of clinching it.

Paris Saint-Germain’s 3-2 come-from-behind win against RB Leipzig puts Les Parisiens back on top of Group A above Manchester City, who clobbered Club Brugge 5-1. The race remains tight as PSG is only up by one point. PSG and Manchester City will play again on November 24. The match between Liverpool and Atlético Madrid was quite a thriller, ending with a 3-2 on the road for the Reds. Liverpool is 3-0 and five points clear of Atlético who sits in second. Los Blancos are in a tie with FC Sheriff Tiraspol for the top spot in Group D. Last month, FC Sheriff pulled off a major upset after they beat Real Madrid 2-1 in Madrid.

Liverpool – Atlético Madrid Showdown Looms

Unfortunately, Atlético Madrid will be without Antoine Griezmann for their next two group games. Griezmann scored a brace in the 3-2 loss, however, he picked up a straight red card after a dangerous hit on Roberto Firmino. For Griezmann, this is his first Champions League red card and he’ll miss the second match against Liverpool, as well as the match against AC Milan. The rematch between Liverpool and Atlético Madrid is on November 3 at Anfield.

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah‘s scoring streak is now at nine games. Now he’s the first Liverpool player to score a goal in nine straight games. A total of eleven goals in his last nine games. In Liverpool’s win against Atlético Madrid, Salah had two goals. Furthermore, Salah is now Liverpool’s top scorer in the club’s Champions League history, with 31 goals in 48 games. This breaks the previous record of 30 goals held by Steven Gerrard.

Bouncing Back

Real Madrid and Manchester City both scored five goals in their matches respectively. Both needed to bounce back after suffering a loss in their previous group match. Manchester City lost to PSG while Real Madrid lost to FC Sheriff Tiraspol. Manchester City is to play Club Brugge again before their rematch with Les Parisien. Los Blancos take on Shakhtar Donetsk on November 3rd before playing FC Sheriff again on November 24.

Les Parisiens were challenged by RB Leipzig at Parc des Princes. Kylian Mbappé put Les Parisiens ahead 1-0 early on scoring a goal on a beautiful play. RB Leipzig would soon equalize and eventually take a 2-1 lead twelve minutes into the second half. With less than 25 minutes left, Lionel Messi would find the back of the net, making it a 2 all tilt. Seven minutes later, Messi scored again on a penalty, giving Les Parisien a 3-2 lead, which PSG would not relinquish. Les Parisiens were awarded another penalty only for Mbappé to not be able to convert. Regardless, a respectable win for PSG.
