The Carolina Panthers announced Monday morning that they will be waiving defensive back Rashaan Gaulden. He was the team’s third round draft pick in 2018. The move comes after the Panthers lost to the Saints in the final seconds of the game on Sunday afternoon in New Orleans.
In the game against the Saints, Gaulden was involved in two mix-ups, one of which gave the Saints an opportunity for a fumble recovery when Gaulden collided with punt returner D.J. Moore, causing the football to bounce off Gaulden’s leg before JT Gray recovered it for the Saints. Gaulden was also in the center of a skirmish in which players’ tempers escalated and pushing and shoving followed a kick return. Both teams received offsetting penalties for unnecessary roughness.
Gaulden played 24 games with the Panthers with 13 total tackles on defense and seven on special teams, and this season only posted one tackle and three stops on special teams. In his career, Gaulden posted 20 tackles total, with five of them beings assists. He didn’t post any sacks, forced fumbles, fumble recoveries, interceptions, or defensive touchdowns. His stat sheet is full of zeroes.
Gaulden responded to the news on Twitter with the following tweet:
God works in mysterious ways thank you 🙏🏽
